It’s the news you have been waiting for!

Tony Award Productions announced on August 21 that they will present the American Theatre Wing’s 74th Annual Tony Awards® digitally this fall.

Final eligibility determinations will be made by the Tony Awards Administration Committee in the coming days. Additional information, including a date and platform for the awards ceremony, will be announced soon.

The Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.

“Though unprecedented events cut the 2019-2020 Broadway season short, it was a year full of extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized,” said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President & CEO of the American Theatre Wing, in a statement. “We are thrilled not only to have found a way to properly celebrate our artists’ incredible achievements this season, but also to be able to uplift the entire theatre community and show the world what makes our Broadway family so special at this difficult time. The show must go on, no matter what – and it will.”

The Antoinette Perry “Tony” Award, which was founded by the American Theatre Wing in 1947, is bestowed annually on theatre professionals for distinguished achievement on Broadway. The Tony is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry and the annual telecast – the night America watches Broadway – is considered one of the most prestigious programs on television.

Wow, definitely didn't see this one coming. It will be interesting to see how they handle this digitally. Glad that those shows and artists from earlier in the season will at least get some type of recognition / celebration for their work!

My first thought with this timing is wondering if (award eligible) shows will now film two different numbers - one for the awards and one for the NBC Broadway special. If they’re going to be filming anyways it would make sense to just do two different videos.

More insight...

Twenty plays and musicals opened during the abbreviated 2019-20 season, but a few might be deemed ineligible because they were open for such a short period of time that not enough Tony nominators or voters got a chance to see them.

But it is widely expected that “Girl From the North Country” and “West Side Story” will not be eligible to compete because they opened too close to the shutdown.

Will Adrienne Warren win the Tony award for best actress in a musical? If I recall, Company did not open. Caroline, or Change never started previews. Was there anyone else in the running?

"Rose in Gypsy was like going through therapy for me. Playing Rose helped me put a lot of emotions to bed. There was so much lacking in Rose and that's why she had to prove herself through her children. [interviewer]In ways that reminded you of your mom?[/interviewer]. Let's just say the role was very interesting for me. That one was the most interesting [I've ever played]" - Bernadette Peters (2018)

Anyone have a quick list of everything that opened already? I'm sure we'll have a list of nominee predictions by EOD....

I believe so.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Nah...Congrats to Laura Linney on her first Tony win.  Especially if she grabs the Emmy for Ozark next month.  If Manhattan Theatre Club actually does produce How I Learned to Drive in 2021 (as I believe was the intention when it was postponed in 2020) then Mary Louise Parker will have an even stronger shot at her second next season.

To answer the question above - Adrienne has this award in the bag. It was always going to come down to a competition between her and Sharon, so in a way I’m very happy that Sharon will get her Tony next year.

And I just can’t believe we live in a world where “The Lightning Thief” could win Beat Score. That’s legit the most 2020 thing that could happen in 2020.

Haha, looks like some of us think alike! Lists are very helpful for reference!

A Christmas Carol is a new adaptation, and therefore not a revival.

Hoping they don't do any awards for musicals, just a list of honorees. Plays can fully compete.

I've been saying for months:

"The Rose Tattoo" had a gorgeous original score by Jason Michael Webb, who just won a special Tony last year for Choir Boy. Everybody forgot about that production, but if it's between this, and The Lightning Thief, I think the voters may magically find themselves with sharper memories.

Not to mention, Jason Michael Webb would probably be the only Black person eligible for Best Score this year, which, given the current social conversations, might sway voters.

This also assuredly will give Danny Burstein his first Tony Award after six nominations over the last 14 years and this warms my heart considering all he has gone through this year.

Best Actress in a Musical is basically between Warren & Elizabeth Stanley.

Best Feat. Actress in a Musical is Lauren Patten.

Best Actor in a Musical is Danny Burstein.

No clue about Feat. Actor in a musical.

Considering how people on this board reacted to my previous thread about this, it isn’t the news they’ve been waiting for.

I thought MLP was great, but doesn't it depend on what category they put Johanna K fromSlave Play in, and what about Laura Linney?

Danny Burstein is eligible in the featured category. Leading actor will hopefully go to Isaac Powell, assuming the production is eligible. IMO, no one else in that category is deserving of a Tony, but I guess it'll have to go to Aaron Tveit otherwise.

I would recommend that everybody making predictions give themselves a refresher on these:

https://www.tonyawards.com/news/tony-awards-eligibility-for-2020-part-1/

https://www.tonyawards.com/news/tony-awards-eligibility-for-2020-part-2/

And remember that if an actor is above the title, they are considered leading UNLESS mentioned otherwise in those 2 links above. And the same is true for the reverse: if an actor is below the title, they are automatically featured UNLESS deemed leading in one of the links above.

To figure out whether an actor was above the title in the program, go to the "program" section for each show and look at the title page:
