Following the Tony Awards postponement to next year at the earliest, I figured CBS would be the network to broadcast a big B'way "gathering" like this as compensation- I guess I was wrong. I too now look forward to October and hope as many shows as possible can join in. 

Hopefully this is just the warmup for the big, grand, seemingly obligatory "Welcome Back, Broadway" telecast when B'way eventually reopens.

Hopefully this isn't one of those now exhausted Zoom specials.  Non-studio audience network comedy series begin filming in their soundstages starting this Monday so production is resuming with lots of safety guidelines: entire cast have been quarantining at home and all crew must be masked at all times.  Actors have hand-held shields to hold between takes.  Camera blocking hasn't been altered whatsoever but cast and creative team (writers, producers, directors) have been doing lots of Zoom table reads in hopes it'll help shooting things quicker next week without too many retakes.

My hubby is on the crew of The Connors. Today is actually their first day back in the studio shooting (sans audience). Baby steps. Seeing a show like SNL back in Stage 8 resuming shooting would be the bigger test for this Night of Broadway. Sitcoms are easy by comparison.

I’ve been wondering if SNL might try in-studio tapings without an audience. It would be bizarre but they did it from home with no audience reaction...

Anything to the rumor that the Tonys will happen in late September/October, with a deadline cut off of February 17th, thus excluding the only musical revival ("West Side Story" and "The Girl From the North Country" until the 2021 Tonys.  It seems a little bit late in the game to be doing this-- when all the other major organizations recognized productions and performances this past spring.  But a virtual Tonys is better than no Tonys at all.

Re the Tonys:  that would seem preposterous at this stage of the game.  But maybe the members  of the League who have to pay a substantial amount to be members lobbied for something to be done, since one of the perks is to see the shows and vote for the Tonys.  One has to wonder about the viability of that organization given the difficult circumstances the industry now finds itself mired in.

Apparently this special would feature a lot of Broadway shows actually performing in their Broadway theaters. Likely just one number from each show. Details are still being working out and all performers and crew would be paid(by NBC?).

Logistically it makes more sense if this were filmed in one theatre on a fixed set (or even on a soundstage).  Regardless this whole idea will be a nightmare to plan.

This is a nice idea. But October is far enough away that it's impossible to know what the situation will be like. Maybe it will be more feasible to pull of, maybe it will be far less feasible.

As for the Tonys: oh my god leave the dead horse alone.

I would guess that for the majority of full members of the League, they wouldn't consider the dues a "substantial amount."

Would love if we finally got to hear Sabrina Carpenter sing something from Mean Girls! 

I read the other day that the Mean Girls' stage manager is looking for work in another field, so I am speculating that show will not be in the first tier of shows to return:

She asked friends with corporate experience to help her rewrite her CV hoping to land a project management role, and she's looked for jobs at coffee shops hoping to use the barista experience she picked up in university.

The real issue is going to be gathering performers. I doubt producers will pay to transport them back, put them in hotels, and pay them for the performance. Maybe they will? But on top of that, you need the technicians to check all the equipment, multiple Stage Managers to run everything, costume assistants...there's so many variables.

Yeah this makes no sense for producers to spend money on. Once tickets are on sale again? Sure. But to spend money on a feel-good tv special that can't sell tickets wouldn't be a smart use of limited funds.

As much as I would like to see this, it makes no sense to me.  Seems like a lot of expense (if the Broadway shows have to pay for their own expenses) for no immediate benefit.  It is not like people are going to be running out to purchase tickets based on this show.

Wouldn't it be better presented closer to the actual re-opening of Broadway, as previously discussed in other threads?

I would imagine that most productions still have their sets in their theaters, but what about costumes, wigs & props? 

..and what about tech? I'd imagine the lights, sound, and other mechanical stuff are leased. Have they been loaded-out?
