Was this show any good? I saw it got a Tony nomination and a decent review in the New York Times, but I can barely get through the cast recording. Every song sounds like the cast is making it up as they go, there's a joke about how the source material is public domain, which is way less clever than they thought it was. Am I missing something or was this show a dud?

It was the most brilliant piece of musical theatre that’s ever existed and the cast was also the best cast that’s ever existed.
The score was the best score that’s ever existed and the set design, well it was the best set design that’s ever existed. And I dare anyone to say anything differently.

No, seriously - I dare anyone to say anything different to see how fast this thread gets deleted.

Trust your own opinion on this, it closed in less than a month. That tells you everything. Good cast, though.

I don't doubt that. Patti Murin, Jason Tam, Barrett Wilbert Weed as an understudy. Just the show itself... Is this what it feels like to hate teen musicals?

It was a lot of fun, saw it a couple of times. Just too "Off-Broadway" for most audiences I guess because I guess it has to have a certain cache.

I really enjoyed this show. It just wasn't quite a fit for Broadway. The off-Broadway production that led to the transfer was the first production in the newly converted Judson gymnasium, which fit very well for a musical about a basketball team. It was also a much smaller space than a Broadway house and easily sold out a lot of its run. The show had good reviews (even a few raves) but it never found an audience on Broadway.

The show is what it is. It's a modern take on Lysistrata set at a university with a losing basketball team and a cheerleader with a plan to turn their luck around.

Essentially this.  I saw it closing weekend.  It was a lot of fun, but it really didn’t belong on Broadway.

There are a handful of shows whose recordi gs I just ant get through. This is one of them.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I thought it was excruciating and to this day am convinced they bought their Times review.

We thought it was a whole lot of fun. Saw it at a matinee and then saw most of the cast at Southern Hospitality having dinner before the evening performance a couple hours later.

I don't know this show, but the mention of it always makes me think of this Andrew Rannells video where he talked about the audition process and the trouble he had with doing the basketball maneuvers out of town.  Plus, there's a bonus of him singing "Let Me Be Your Star" from Smash at the end!

"It's you." "It's me. Orpheus." "Eurydice..." *crying*

While I think it has a couple of nice songs, I too find it hard to keep listening. I feel like had they taken the score more seriously at certain parts, that it would have done well. The opening number starts off well but once they start introducing the characters and all that I kind of lose interest. The story, cast, and yeah some of the music are very good though. I feel like it was maybe also a show that was hard to appeal to certain people. Idk if that’s true tho just a guess
