I dream of her playing Margaret in The Light in the Piazza. Just a little fantasy of mine. What other roles do you want her to play? What could possibly be next for her once Broadway is open and back to normal?
"See a picture of a woman wearing four years of confusion like a scar."
Rose, Mrs. Lovett, Dolly Levi, The Witch, so many. But I also randomly imagined her in Victor/Victoria a while ago and now I can’t get it out of my mind.
Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. With her pipes and radiant beauty, I’d love to see her in those costumes. She could’ve replaced Glenn Close in the revival.
I'd love to see her play Helen in an all Black production of Fun Home with Cynthia Erivo as Alison that's never going to happen - I'd be happy with her singing "Days and Days" in concert, though.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
A Director said: "Enough with revivals; she should do a new play."
I'd love to see her in a new play too! But given that this is a dreamcasting thread, we can't very well dreamcast her in something that doesn't exist.
Sally in "Follies," and Helen in "Fun Home" are my 2 favorite ideas mentioned in this thread so far!
I'd also love to see her do some more Shakespeare: maybe Cleopatra, Lady Macbeth, Queen Margaret in "Henry VI," Beatrice in "Much Ado."
As for other classic roles: Mary Tyrone, Linda Loman, Amanda Wingfield - any and all of those great roles. We almost had her as Blanche Dubois! So disappointing! Hope it still ends up happening after COVID.
I really was rooting for her to play Marian in the Sound of Music - but the Sutton Foster announcement killed that dream...
Too bad - while I like Sutton - I think Audra and Hugh Jackman would have made a fantastic pair. Still haven't heard any evidence of Sutton's actual soprano voice - but I'm withholding judgement until I see them in November 2021. But Audra would have killed that role.
For plays... I'd love to see her do August Osage County. Doesn't even matter which part, I think she'd kill both female leads when she's age appropriate for them.
