i was disappointed that Lupone and Joe Mantello were not nominated. I thought his was the best performance in the show. Imo all of the design nominaionswere warranted, and I would imagine they will be stiff competition, even if The Crown ends up prevailing there.
However, IMO, the show did not deserve nominations for mini-series, writing or direction.
Honestly, I was surprised at the nominations it did receive. And agree Mantello was easily the best performance in the series, so the real shame. (Love Patti, but what the writing gave her in screen time it lacked in an interesting arc.)
I'll add my voice to the "Mantello" choir! His performance was outstanding. He's such an incredible actor - I would even venture to say that he's a better actor than he is a director, and he's no hack at directing either. His performance definitely elevated the whole series. He was definitely better than Parsons and McDermott, and I would even say he was better than Taylor and LuPone.
He also had better material to work with than Jeremy Pope, so if I had to say which one was a better performance overall, I might say Mantello. However, Pope's performance was also excellent, and he is so freaking talented. I'm beyond thrilled that he's now an Emmy nominee. That young man is an absolute star in the making, and I can't wait to see where his career goes. From a career standpoint, I'd rather see a newcomer like Jeremy Pope get the Emmy recognition to propel his career, rather than seeing established pros like Parsons, Taylor, or even LuPone and Mantello, adding to their awards shelf.

I agree with everything you say except that I do not think Patti deserved a nomination. I also think Parsons did not deserve a nomination. With the Emmys, I think the nomination "process" produces unfortunate results.

I definitely would have given Mantello the nomination over Parsons. I have to admit thinking that Parsons was nominated because he is Jim Parsons.
The show was a dud, so it didn't really deserve anything. Jeremy Pope was the best part of it. That man is going to be a huge star, he is well on his way.

That is what I was alluding to re the "process." Parsons is "of" the voting block, Mantello is not. Jim is very well liked by that cohort, Joe, not so much.

I just don't see it, like at all. What am I missing?
Why are we comparing Joe Mantello and Jeremy Pope? They were in different categories. Mantello and Parsons were in the same category and Mantello 100% deserved the nomination over Parsons who was very bad in a terribly written role (and show, for that matter).
Carlos, this article most aligns with my opinion of the show.
"On the surface, it’s a sweet idea. Marginalized people assert themselves in the cultural machinery at a crucial moment when film is a sudden and inescapable monoculture, and as a result … ? Equality, I suppose, or maybe financial security? Or … respect? Or the disappearance of prejudice? Hollywood is not long on the details of the aftermath, nor does it care much about details at all, in any scope beyond “how many male hookers are in this scene” or “how naked are they?”
@HenryTDobson - I believe I was the first person in this thread to make a Mantello vs. Pope comparison. Frankly, I forgot that Pope was in the leading category. Mea Culpa there. Though on some level my intention was also just to discuss the performances in the show, and which ones stood out to me as the most worthy of awards recognition, regardless of category. And I thought Mantello and Pope gave the two best performances, hence the comparison between them.
@darreyl - do you mean that you don’t see the hype around Pope? Just wondering, did you see him in Choir Boy?

Fair enough! I agree that both performances stood out among the rest and would have gotten my vote.
God I pray every day for someone new to come along who's a Ryan Murphy but with actual talent and give our favorite actresses actual good material to work with.
He is just SUCH a hack.
Patti is better off. Give her an emmy for something worthy of her. This was just stupid stupid stupid
