Prime example of how no one is all good or all bad in this world. That tweet is disappointing but it's very on brand for 2020! Thanks for your thoughts, J.

" For the record, this is the Tweet/thread I saw in which he expresses support for Trump:

https://twitter.com/chadkimball1/status/1269496393892315137

I read the tweet and did not see where he "supported" Trump. Basically, he was saying he was effective politician which is different than supporting one of his positions.

My Mom God rest her soul loved Frank Sinatra. She loved his voice and had so many of his records. She was not naive and heard that he was not really a nice man in his private life. She was able to separate her love of his talent and his personal life. I wish we could go back in time and just appreciate performers for their talent, not going to happen - oh well.

As JBroadway said so succinctly earlier, it's about what you prioritize:

"Kimball is allowed to be many things at once, including a good performer, a person who walks around the world treating others with kindness, AND a person who openly supports a racist, homophobic, anti-semitic, rapist. I can acknowledge the first 2 things, while also condemning him for the 3rd thing. One can choose to prioritize the 1st and 2nd things over the 3rd, but personally, I see the 3rd as a more true reflection of where his values lie than how he treats fans at the stage door."

It's difficult to separate art and artist for me because by enjoying's a person's art, you are also contributing to them financially, enabling/encouraging that large platform from which they can broadcast their (harmful) views. If one dislikes a performer's politics, it's fully acceptable to not enrich them by not purchasing their art (or shopping at their stores, or eating at their restaurant, etc). In our capitalist world, the only way for the average person to enact change or invoke the smallest amount if power is as a consumer.

This thread is weird. One person said "Oh no, Chad Kimball has gross ideas!" And then a bunch of people are like "YEA BUT HE'S ALLOWED TO HAVE GROSS IDEAS BECAUSE HE'S NICE AND TALENTED!!!!!" Which. Yea. Of course. I don't see where anyone said he should be fired. Or that he wasn't allowed to be gross.  He's sharing those ideas on a performative, public platform. People here aren't criticizing his private faith. They're criticizing his curated social media account. He can easily avoid this by not sharing.

Chad Kimball has liked a ton of tweets criticizing Covid lockdowns and encouraging aggressively reopening the country. Things the very same people who are defending him viciously attacked other posters about. Which. Yea. Of course.  This is a message board and that's how it works. Chad Kimball can be both an idiot and good at singing. And if you wanna hear him sing, cool cool. If he is nice to you and that made you feel good, also great. His political beliefs are vile. If they were expressed by someone on this board, you'd have no problem saying so.

A sampling of liked tweets:

"We want younger people to get and recover from the virus. That helps protect those in nursing home when we start getting herd immunity"

"Actually yes it is working out great... No deaths because our governor here in Texas actually protected all the old people. Unlike the Democrat States who killed the old people."

"You people still think Im under some delusion that he's righteous. I did NOT vote for him 2016. Because of all the morally repugnant things he did in his life. I voted 3rd party. But this year? His results were amazing, despite his crap, and I'll happily vote for him this year!"

"You can hate me if you want, but I refuse to wear a mask."

Jesus saves. I spend.

I've had the pleasure of working with Chad for a couple of years. Great guy. Can't say enough positive things about him personally on the job. (And I'm not a Trump supporter BTW, I've never had a political discussion with him so, I have no info about his)While I agree when you make you opinions public, they become more than just a separate part of your life. (Which is why thankfully us older folks don't use much social media). But, for all the moral judging, how many of us use Apple products when we know, we KNOW, they have human rights violations, repeatedly? How many of us use products on this list posted below, that have other horrible human right violations? It's really really hard to do all the good work necessary. And I'm right there with you. I've bought Nike products. Our world  order has made it practically impossible to do enough research on every single product you buy. And the ones you buy to save some money. Come on, we all know conditions at places where Wal-Mart gets their goods from is not all great. Yet, we go there anyway. Even tho they also don't treat their own workers so great.  I mean I drink Poland Spring all the time. Love it. Just read that Nestle has over 100,000 child laborers working in hazardous conditions.

Life, unfortunately is complicated. I try hard not to pass judgment on others. Cause it seems to me we would all fail the test. But, ya can't sit there sucking on a Poland Spring saying some guy is vile because of his "liked tweets". Makes no sense to me.

Except that most people don't make their vile choices public.

He has. The trade off is that people get to publicly share their opinion about his opinion.

I appreciate him as a performer. His opinions don't change that for me. I'd never not go see a play because Chad Kimball was in it. But also. He's promoting damaging and deadly and gross information.

Additionally. Criticizing people for "moral judging" when the thing that sucks about Chad Kimball's twitter is all the "moral judging" he's doing... it's a real humdinger.

I didn't read all of his tweets. I'm not a tweet guy. But, yea, I'd say he's wrong for all of his moral judging. And while  I agree is that he has a right to his opinions, and since he's in the public eye-and knows it-everyone has a right to discuss those opinions. I'm not against that. But, calling him "stupid" and "vile" are things I felt like defending. So, I added, IMO, he's neither of those things. And I pointed out none of us are perfect or are on a hill to judge him on, in that vein.

Interesting thread.

I don’t really care one way or the other about Chad Kimball, but here are a few thoughts:

Trump is not a Republican, he is the leader of a far right political party of his own creation.

Many Republicans cannot stand Trump.

Being a Republican does not automatically make someone a “bad” person.

Supporting Trump doesn’t either.

Nobody is completely good or bad.

That said, Trump is about as bad as a person can get. Anyone who supports him is not someone I want to be around - or see onstage.

For numerous reasons - especially his actions against LGBTQ people - anyone in the theatre industry who supports him needs to either keep that to themselves or find another line of work, because if someone works in the theatre and publicly supports Trump, it is a HUGE insult to many, many of their peers.

I said his beliefs that he's shared publicly are vile. I don't think he's vile. People have immense capacities for change and I don't know him personally.

He's liked tweets that suggest more people should get COVID, the lockdown is an over reaction and should be ended, President Trump is doing a good job (ESPECIALLY if you're a Christian), that Black Lives Matter protests are comparable to Nazi's and endangering society, that the Washington ____ shouldn't change their name, and on and on.

I find those things vile but I do not object to his right to express them.

FYI, he has no problem calling people "evil" and called their behavior "idiocy." Did you jump in there?

For the record, this is the Tweet/thread I saw in which he expresses support for Trump:

My grandmother was obsessed with Frank Sinatra. She loved his talent so much, but one day when we were having a tea party with my stuffed animals while listening to him, she said "Beautiful singer but a real dirtbag!". I thought it was funny, while not totally understanding it until I got older. As I said earlier, it's not my style to judge someone on their political leanings or faith. I judge people on how they treat other people generally. I disagree with Chad, but will still love and support his work always.

Until this thread came along, I had never heard of this person.  So, I devoted a number of my limited minutes remaining on Planet Earth to learn more about him.  Except that I realized that he is nothing more than yet another Born-Again Trumper, those minutes were wasted.  His statement above (and I have no reason to believe it is not accurately reported here), is simply appalling.  And yes, I do hate him for refusing to wear a mask.

But, now it's time to get back to matters that really matter in my life.........doing my bit to support Joe Biden, our next President of the United States.

I'm mostly surprised that someone posting on this here Broadway Whirled dot Com website has never heard of Chad Kimball, whose body of work is hard to ignore at least. I'm also surprised one would admit it.

As for the subject at hand, the likes are disappointing, but I guess it means we get to know more about him.
