Summer Travel 2020?

Hi all,
Im wondering if anyone is planning on doing any kind of travel this summer and if so, have you gotten any pushback from friends/relatives about it? Do you feel safe traveling? Are there any destinations (assuming domestic only) that you consider too unsafe to visit?

I normally go to New York City for a theater binge twice every summer so Im itching to go somewhere

I am considering doing the Coast Starlight Amtrak train from Los Angeles to Seattle. I would get to see all that awesome scenery, but I would be in my own room and even have my meals served to me there. I really wouldnt have to interact with anyone once Im on the train. It seems like its a way to see the most and interact the least.

Some of my family members think its a fun idea. When I told my cousin, her 7 year old son said mommy, why are some people dumb enough to travel? Ouch. So Im getting some pushback.

Anybody have any interesting travel ideas for this summer?

My husband and I make our home in San Diego.  This train trip (but only as far as San Francisco) is definitely on our Bucket List.  Given that we currently share our world with COVID-19, we would not travel any earlier than the summer of 2021.  It's just not a risk we are willing to take.  If you decide to make this journey, I'm confident you will take all the necessary precautions.  Have fun, if you go!

Years ago, I took the train from Portland to Seattle to Vancouver.  I don't know if the train was the Coast Starlight or just a regular train.  If it was just a regular train, the scenery was gorgeous. So on this specific train, it would be even more spectacular.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, Highland. And art man yeah the scenery should be gorgeous. Amtrak will serve meals in private rooms so I won’t have to eat around people and I pretty much won’t have to interact with anyone at all so I’m hoping this will work.

Curious if anyone else has travel plans or everyone will not travel til next year

Cancelled all my travel plans for 2020. I have no desire to pay money to have to wear a mask on vacation nor do I have any desire to fly. I'm not anti mask, I wear them when I have to go out here but I'm just not paying to go to places and have to wear one.

Florida is now the epicenter of this, 56 hospital ICUs are at capacity in the state. Please be extremely careful.

Actually, although you couldn't tell from the statistics, Jacksonville and Orlando is doing much better in mask compliance and social distancing.  I live in Jacksonville and visited Orlando on June 28.  When you go into stores, 85% are now wearing masks.  Helps now that it is a requirement.  Then you have the stragglers making up the rest that don't wear them.  They are young and old, Black, White, Asian, Latino and the rest.  All of these new cases are from all of the people, especially younger, not taking the virus seriously.  I'm sure there are increases in areas that have beaches, colleges and clusters of bars/nightclubs., where the "it doesn't affect me attitude" pervails.

Well, I cancelled my Coast Starlight train ticket and flight to LA because it just did not seem worth the worry. My new travel plan is to go to.............a suburban mall!   I know it sounds silly but I never shop anywhere except Target, Walgreens, Amazon, and local supermarkets. So to go to a mall and see all these stores in person will be like stepping back in time.  I'll wear a mask; I'll stay away from people; I'll only go for a few hours, but I think it'll be fun.

That's a shame you cancelled the train trip.  Don't go with high expectations with the suburban mall.  There really isn't much to see.

I canceled all my non-essential travel for the remainder of the year. This summer I was planning to spend time in Denver and California, but obviously none of that is happening.

My husband and I own a small home in Western Massachusetts and are spending the month of July there. (Maybe longer, depending on how things go.) We arrived last week and it was the first time in months that we'd been more than 5 miles from our primary residence.
