Ok so a few things. This information is four years old and like a celebrity death that pops up again, it’s being shared as if it’s brand new information and it’s not. In 2016 this was discussed and known.

Secondly, the donations were made by James M. Nederlander who died shortly after these donations were made in 2016. Since then, nearly 97% of all Political donations from the Nederlanders have gone to Democrats.

> the donations were made by James M. Nederlander who died shortly after these donations were made in 2016. Since then, nearly 97% of all Political donations from the Nederlanders have gone to Democrats.<

With info credited to OnStage Blog:

On June 30, 2016, James L. Nederlander, the son of James M. Nederlander, and the current President of the Nederlander Organization, donated $60,000 to the Trump campaign. Two separate donations of $2,700 were made to the campaign, “Donald Trump for President Inc.,” $30,000 went to a Trump PAC titled “Trump Victory” and $24,600 went to the Republican National Committee(RNC).

Combined with the donations from his father, Nederlander donations were $160,000 for Trump and $1,500 for Clinton.

In 2012, they donated $122,900 to Mitt Romney entities and zero to Barack Obama. In 2008, they donated $70,800 to McCain and Palin's campaign and zero to Barack Obama.

Right. What I wrote doesn't dispute that.

>Right. What I wrote doesn't dispute that.<

You credit the donations to James L. Nederlander's late father, James M.

James L., the son, is alive and also made contributions.

I actually haven't seen many shows in these theaters but it's unfortunate that the ones I have seen (War Paint, The Cher Show, If/Then, Waitress, etc.) have tended to center the stories of women.

Maybe time to re-name the "Jimmy Awards"?

a lot of people have been noting that nothing will ever be the same after the pandemic, that 2020 will be a pivot year in that respect, for this industry as well as this city. I think the murder of George Floyd will make this doubly true, and this is a straightforward example of how that could play out. Film at 11.

How many times has Olivo threatened to leave the business?
There are plenty of others waiting in line behind her.

She also has tons of support within the industry that agree with her, support her, and stand with her through this. So, I'd say the "plenty of people" are now standing by her side regarding this.

And she has a great point. The shows put on have some incredible messages that are contradictory to the organizations many of these rich landlords / producers donate to.

There is a certain irony being the house of “Rent” and donating to Trump. I guess this reminds you, money reigns supreme, even on Broadway.

I agree I wonder why this is coming up now when it should have been made a point back in 2016. What's more important are his contributions in recent years especially in this election season!

Anyway for those of you who want to see the facts for yourselves, go to

https://www.fec.gov/introduction-campaign-finance/how-to-research-public-records/individual-contributions/

and search for James Nederlander or the other theater owners (Robert Wankel/Philip Smith are co-heads of Schubert org, and Jordan Roth is President of Jujamcyn.)

As for James Nederlander's contributions for 2019-2020, I saw he mainly donated to Democratic candidates/causes:

Thomas Suozzi for Congress

Win the Era PAC (Pete Buttigieg)

Carolyn Maloney for Congress

Kirsten Gillibrand 2020

Doesn't look like Nederlander donated to Trump's reelection at all (for now).

Interesting that Karen Olivo is working at the Hirschfeld Theatre which is owned by the Roth family who co-own several buildings with Trump, supported his presidential campaign, attended his victory party and inauguration, and Steven Roth served on Trump's Economic Advisory Council.

The Broadway community acts like half the country doesn’t support, vote, and love, Trump. We live in such a bubble it’s hard to see past that, but his supporters are widespread and very common outside the city.

If people who voted for Trump stopped seeing Moulin Rouge, for example, I promise you the show would be impacted. This isn’t an excuse for the Nederlanders, but I mean come on.

I was discussing this earlier with a friend. I had a similar thought, though I think the difference is that Jordan Roth himself doesn't seem to support Trump. If Larry Kramer's recent Facebook post about the Roths is anything to judge by, it seems that Jordan's worst offense here is being complicit and unresponsive to his father's actions, at least in the public eye. Maybe Olivo would see that as more palatable than working in a building owned by someone who actively supports Trump. Or maybe she just doesn't know Jordan's father has ties with Trump.

She probably doesn't realize that less than 10% of the revenue from a show goes to the theater owners. Granted almost all of their costs are covered so that's almost all profit for them. There are producers and co-producers who make a lot more money off of shows who support Trump.

Not everyone is going to have the same political views. It seems unrealistic to me to expect everyone to agree on everything.  I may not agree with my boss politically, but does that mean I should quit my job? If any artist doesn't want to work for someone with opposing views, I have no problem with that, it's a free country.

Yup.  I was puzzled by this. She/they seemed to ignore the dates and contributors. This keeps popping up on my facebook feed.
