Not that this changes the point of your post, but two OG ensemble members are missing from this: Betsy Struxness and Emmy Raver-Lampman.

Are you sure that ERL is missing? She's listed in all of the credits for the film. Struxness is not.

I’m so excited about this. Even just the shots they’ve been repurposing for each of the trailers are excellent. Looks like Thomas Kail did a great job of capturing, on film, what made the show exciting on stage.

"hmmm there's too much going on... I'm going to make it even more confusing by changing the camera every 5 seconds, screw the choreographer".

I almost got dizzy

Thomas Kail directed and edited the film. So.

It's too early to judge, but the clips are making me worry Thomas Kail got too busy with the quick-cutting, especially in a pivotal moment like this one, when the combination of the choreography and lighting clearly explains what's going on. That was one choreography sequence when a single camera in the center mezzanine would have worked just fine.

I've been rewatching Fosse/Verdon this week, and his direction didn't bother me there. I just wonder if he felt pressure to really wow everyone (so it wouldn't feel like a fairly static stage show recording) and overdid it.

If memory serves, there similar complaints when Rent was filmed. They probably thought it would look more trendy that way. And the Miss Saigon recording went crazy with close-ups.

Indiewire gives the film an A-

"But the bits that don’t fall under the “for the most part” umbrella are what make this “Hamilton” more than just a photographic memory. Better than a front-row seat, Kail’s film — and we can basically call it that — is just cinematic enough to amplify and accentuate the show’s emotional undertow without messing with the carefulness of its stage direction. Close-ups might seem an obvious choice for this sort of thing, especially when shot at a distance so as not to break the proscenium of the stage, but they’re used sparingly enough to puncture the spectacle of it all with a real sense of purpose."

So is the whole OBC getting some portion of money from the Disney+ deal as part of the initial 2016 deal they got to receive a portion of future Hamilton grosses?

At least this time they would actually deserve it.

I would imagine. I think the reason Leslie was holding out was because of this reason

I actually like the Miss Saigon recording quite a lot. It almost feels like a movie, which is pretty amazing considering there was an audience there. They took it from one medium and transposed it beautifully to another. It's something completely different from seeing it on a theatre but still represents the show in an amazing way. Hamilton just looks... crazy, so far. I really hope the rewind thing sticks out like a sore thumb and the rest of the recording is better edited.

I could be mistaken but I thought she had left by the time this was filmed. Elizabeth Judd, who replaced ERL in the track is also listed in the credits, so who knows. ERL didn't post the trailer on Instagram either, and it seems like the entire rest of the cast did.

Thomas Kail did NOT edit this. Jonah Moran did. Thomas Kail directed this and is one of the many producers.

This film of HAMILTON was filmed in July 2016.  FOSSE/VERDON started filming in November 2018 — 2 full years later.

This calmed some of my worries about the editing

"Due to the abundance of long shots and smooth cutting, the intermittent closeups are all the more striking in their intimacy. And sometimes their comedy.
– Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times"
