Hugh Jackman on HBO’s ‘Bad Teacher’, Quarantine Breadmaking Tips, and Quentin Tarantino
by Christina Radish April 24, 2020

Have you had conversations about what to do with The Music Man?

JACKMAN: For sure. Yeah, we’re talking about it, all the time. Obviously, safety and what is best for people’s health is number one. It’s a bit about my pay grade to really make the decisions of when. We are due to start rehearsals on June 29, so it’s a little up in the air ‘cause we’re not actually seeing an audience until September and opening in October. So, we don’t know what’s gonna happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if it just pushes back a little, but hopefully not too long.

I was curious about whether you’d try rehearsing over Zoom from home, or how that was going to work.

JACKMAN: Yeah. I’ve been FaceTiming with my musical director and singing with him quite a lot. I’ve also been FaceTiming with my choreographer. Just before we closed, we did a workshop, Sutton [Foster] and myself, and learned a lot of the dances. I have time and I have space here, luckily enough, to do some dancing, so I’ve been doing quite a bit of that.

Can't edit properly --

maybe it should read " It’s a bit ABOVE my pay grade to really make the decisions of when. " not  "about" (article typo error)

Nope.  He is embarrassing himself.  He is not an American citizen so he didn't vote for either of them.  Him singing at an event for Hillary means nothing.  He is friends and a supporter of the Trumps even after all the things they have done, he has said he is still their friend.  You may be fine looking the other way but I am not.

Jerry Zaks has confirmed that the show will not go on as scheduled, but he's hoping for a postponement, rather than an outright cancellation.

I hope it's also deferred and not outright cancelled.

If it is cancelled, do you guys think Beetlejuice can get the Winter Garden back? Has Beetlejuice done a load out yet? I understand its last performance was slated to be early June.

Yes Beetlejuice will stay there forever and the theatre will be so grateful for their agreeing to do so, it will be renamed the Deetz Theatre and a new New York law will be passed that no other show may perform at the same time that Beetlejuice is performing and that the show itself is considered a landmark, barring it from ever closing.

Finally, a credible solution that should more than satisfy those who have decided to focus all of their OCD energy to solving the Beetlejuice issue.

You are right - it is selfish of you. And to say you're dying to see it is so insensitive. Death is constantly on everyone's mind amidst a city that could very possibly fall apart economically from the pandemic. Essential workers are risking their lives every day and the Front Liners are the only people I am interesting seeing on a stage and being applauded right now...and in the (near?) future.

I'm definitely hoping it still happens.  Whenever it does open, I'm sure it will sell well!  I know I'll be there!

I guess Zak's priority will be getting Mrs. Doubtfire up and running when the shut down ends.  Looking forward to that one as well!

Is it really necessary to shame an excited theatregoer on a THEATRE BOARD for expressing a desire to see THEATRE??  Think not.  Many people are looking forward to the things and events we get to see and do when things better.  And they will get better.

Why are you interpreting my opinion as me shaming someone? Maybe you agree with me and are just afraid to express the same.

You want to see Broadway come back? Then, for example, send that money you want to spend on tickets to actors who may have to move out of NYC and go God knows where once the rent moratorium is over and Broadway is still shut down. Now THAT, I hope does not happen - but it could. Then let's revisit the insensitivity of certain people who come on this board and parade their wishes to see Hugh Jackman starring on Broadway, who TRUST ME is financially doing just fine...biding his time while these performers are wondering what will become of them and their careers once there is movement in...when....Fall of 2021, perhaps?

You think Cuomo is going to convince his Real Estate buddies to forgive rents all the way up until then? You think Our government is going to keep sending us $1200 each to keep going in this city, that TRUST ME, has yet to see the real pain come to the surface.

Go to the hospitals and see what the Front Liners are doing. My need to express gratitude to them from a seat in a theatre was totally ignored by your post and INSTEAD, you said I was shaming someone.

Oof.

Yes, again, I think you are shaming someone for being excited to see a musical.  I'm excited to see musicals too.  That's why I am on this board.  Actually, isn't that why we are all here?  So, yeah, I don't agree with your take at all.  And that's ok, cause we don't all have to agree.

The world is in a dark place.  It'll get better.  People cope in different ways.  Looking towards the future, and the good stuff that will come in the future, even if it is a simple and trite as seeing Hugh Jackman in a musical, is actually a healthy thing.  I really don't think it's insensitive at all to express the desire to see or do something.  In my large circle of friends and family, we are all constantly talking about fun things we are looking forward to doing when we can.  Not ashamed.  Not one bit.

And I think it's wonderful that you support front line workers.  I do too!  Some dear friends are nurses.  They are true heroes, for sure!

Of course it's not. That person is lost on the internet, clearly. They publicly shamed Matt Doyle, one of the sweetest guys ever, just to be awful. Ignore and block them. Immediately.

I am SO EXCITED for Broadway to come back! And what a place to post this very sentiment! <3

The return of the bright lights of Broadway will likely be one of the most significant accomplishments of New York City and the theatre-loving public ( whether one comes from the area or will have to take a plane ride to get there) once the crisis abates to a tolerable level. It is the least expected to be at the starting block when NYC reopens its doors...but it represents a sign to people that it may well be the light at the end of the tunnel!  Many think that a feel-good musical will do that... and it is not unusual for people to look forward to the return of those whose runs were interrupted or whose plans to open might be delayed.

Count me in among those who won't mind a  long plane ride simply to experience that feel-good feeling one more time! And who thanks Rudin, Hugh, and Zaks for trying to bring The Music Man back to the stage! I will be happy to chat ( if already allowed) to anyone sitting next to me, before that much awaited  hush comes, the lights dim, and the curtain ( if rhere is one) starts to open! Such a fantastic feeling!

This will be the nail in the coffin of my NYC trip this year crying. It makes me sad, but it makes the most sense if they postpone to Fall 2021 in my opinion. Let's hope it is just a postponement.
