Should BroadwayCon 2021 be virtual?#1
Posted: 4/17/20 at 1:44am

I've been thinking, in about nine months from now, the world will still be doing some degree of social distancing/quarantine. BroadwayCon is around this time, and it appeals to the younger generation, so what do you think? The whole convention is virtual, everything is free on Zoom, except for the song/dance workshops. The marketplace is abolished, of course, but money will be donated to BC/EFA and the Actors' Fund.

I think this is a perfect idea, since many fans seem to meet each other and strike up their friendships on social media to begin with. I also believe this will open up the world of theatre to a much wider audience. Feel free to comment your thoughts on this idea below.

No. As someone who has been going to this since the beginning, it's a terrible idea. And what is your obsession with everything being online or abolished in person?

I don’t think the poster meant to abolish it in person forever but for this year since there will still be public gathering restrictions and no vaccine.  It might not be ideal but it’s a way to still hold it instead of cancelling.   I think it’s a good alternative.

Well, the OP has posted threads about theater ending and how nobody should gather together ever again, so that's why I reacted this way.

I don't think so.  The event should be canceled for 2021.  I am not sure there will be much to celebrate by next January.  Come back strong in 2022.

I think BroadwayCon and Con culture commodifies the experience of meeting your favorite stars and the chance to see them at panels or do other things outside of the stage that simply cannot be replicated through the computer. I guess people could cosplay and Zoom, celebrities would sign autographs in their home and mail them (but what if one was asymptomatic, mailing signed goods) but I don't think this is a good idea.

Also, is BroadwayCon typically for charity? I assumed they paid talent and made money.

I think celebrities, especially Broadway stars, may have to cut back doing charity appearances for free during the quarantine soon as there is no sign they will be able to work offline in the near future.

The BroadwayFlea should be online though :)

Revisiting this... it has just been announced a virtual BroadwayCon will occur from April 17-18. Passes will be available December 9, and all MainStage programming will be free to stream on YouTube and Facebook Live.

I agree 100%. I don't know how successful the Flea Market was, but I highly doubt this would see much success virtually. 2022 seems the best option.
