While everything seems to be 'on indefinite hold' right now, Glenn Close has her plans set for once this 'hold' is lifted:
"It will be great to get back to work. Hopefully I'll be doing a miniseries that hasn't been announced yet but it will bring me back home. Oh, and probably look forward to a great celebration. I don't know when that will be, when we're all allowed out of the house — we may have to be careful for a long time.
I've always loved TV and when this was presented to me, I loved the premise of the story and the character. It will be something that'll be fun, creative and different. And by the end of the year, I really would love to work on the movie based on Sunset Boulevard the musical. That's always on my mind and I think we're getting closer ..."

I hope she's right about this. Last we heard was a year ago, when they found a director, and it was supposed to start filming 6 months ago. Now she's saying the end of this year. She's going to age out of the role if we wait much longer.
This really needs to happen. Glenn is marvelous and I hope this comes to fruition.

Maybe they can just hire Patti ?

This video just really made me want David Corenswet as Joe

See I guess joe would really be up in the air. While TImothee Chalamet would be around the correct age. In contrast to Glenn they would need someone like Patrick Wilson. Unless they really wanted to play up on the age gap

She already has.
This has been talked about before but here we go again. She's a few years to late on this party. She is great in the role but even she is to old for the part now unless they change up the timeline here. A big part of this plot and really anytime we address "old" women in that era of Hollywood (looking at YOU all the recently popular pop culture interest in Bette Davis and Joan Crawford) is that these "old" women were... really not THAT old. There is a line right in the score, "There's nothing wrong with being 50 unless you are acting 20" as well as mention of her being a teenager in her early silent movies. Close is 73 and it shows.
And I'll be the one to say it as well, IF we are going to remake this movie and IF we are going to have an actress in her 70s playing an actress in her 50s... I'd rather see Meryl tackle this role than Close.
Since Glenn has been inextricably linked to the musical, the project most likely would not come to fruition without her, despite her age. That’s why they need to get moving on it ASAP.
To that end, I can think of a small cadre of other actresses who would be far more age appropriate and, likely, could meet the demands of the role, like Michelle Pfeiffer, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Madonna (don’t laugh, but I think she could hack it), Angela Bassett or Vanessa Williams (if they went colorblind - though it would be very historically inaccurate).

I would love to see Catherine Zeta-Jones as Norma, Chris Pine (whose vocals have improved a lot since Into The Woods) as Joe, Ron Raines as Max, and Laura Osnes as Betty. Also Rob Ashford is a completely wrong choice as director, give it to either Rob Marshall or Damien Chazelle who have the talent and experience to pull off this kind of movie.

You need to embrace the fact that the characters are singing, something that Rob Marshall is hesitant to do. Both Chicago and Nine he had to come up with those framing devices to justify the singing and the only reason he allowed the characters in Into the Woods to sing was because it was a fairy tale world so reality didn't matter. I don't know that I'd trust him to trust the material in Sunset Boulevard.
I think Bill Condon would be a good director. He works well with dark and campy material. When Glenn is made up she can play younger than 70. If they changed it to “nothings wrong with being 60” I think it’s fine. I think Wilson, Jackman would be fine. They can cast Betty as young as they want because Hollywood doesn’t mind pairing ingenues with old men.

While Rob did indeed use the "framing device" for both Chicago and Nine, at this point of his career, he's done two musicals in a row (soon three with The Little Mermaid) where he didn't need it. I'm making a wild guess here that he may have realized that after Nine failed big time that he has dropped the idea of "framing devices" in the films he's involved in and just allows the musical genre be the genre it is. But that's my guess.
I had to check IMDB to see what his fourth movie musical was as I totally forgot that he did Mary Poppins Returns (though the fact that I forgot that was him says something in itself about my own thoughts on his style of directing). I'd say that Mary Poppins Returns is sort of a bridge between the fairy tale world of Into the Woods where he did allow the characters to unabashedly sing and placing singing characters in a world that feels more familiar to our own (though Mary Poppins has so much inherent "magic" in it you could argue that it's just a modern day fairy tale).
At any rate, I'd probably be more comfortable seeing him on the project than Rob Ashford. The Sound of Music Live just lived in an uncomfortable dull place, and the less said about Peter Pan Live the better.
A Director said: "The movie version of JCS BOMBED.
The movie version of Phantom BOMBED.
The movie version of CATS BOMBED.
Glenn, let's make if Four For Four."
Norman Jewison's 1973 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's groundbreaking rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" did NOT bomb. It grossed 24.5 million at the box office against an estimated 3.5 million dollar budget. It earned approximately 10.8 million dollars in USA box office rentals.
It was one of the most successful movie musicals of the 1970s.
It ranked #11 in the top 20 box office hits of 1973 right behind "Serpico".
Do your homework before spreading erroneous information.
Now as far as Glenn's hopes of starting the 'Sunset' movie by the end of this year I do wish her much luck with that. As for Glenn having aged out of the character, that actually happened years ago.
I like the idea of Damian Chazelle directing this. I think there were rumors he was going to replace Daldry on Wicked, which ended up not being true. I’d think he’d do a good job on this.
