With the announcement from mirvish in Toronto that Lobe Never Dies will be coming to Toronto this fall I wonder if its a set up to bring it to New York next winter/spring 2021. As even a sit down for a couple four months or something kind of the same idea as miss Saigon.

I also noticed next spring they are bringing in &Juliet. My guess is that itll transfer to Broadway fall 2021

I assumed the Toronto run was apart of the upcoming world tour. This show will never make it to broadway.

With the Britney Spears Musical opening in the summer, would there be any rights issues bringing “& Juliet” to Broadway, seeing as they both use some of the same music?

Only if either production has any sort of exclusivity clause, I suppose.

They should just do what Bat Out of Hell did--play City Center for 8 weeks so anyone who had a mild interest in it can finally see it and move on.

I’ve seen this show on tour and rather enjoyed it, although there were some songs and sets that were just head-scratching or plain awful. I’ve also seen the original at the Majestic in NYC, and to me the show is stunning and near flawless. These two have no business being on Broadway at the same time, as it’ll make one of the two look far more absurd than on its own. As far as I’m concerned Love Never Dies should just remain on tour “in perpetuity”.

I live in NYC and would love to see it play City Center or something.

The recent US tour didn't exactly light the box office ablaze across the country. I really doubt that a NY run other than a limited engagement would fare much better.

I enjoyed the tour when I saw it in Philly, though I can't say it didn't border on ridiculous at times.  I can't see this faring well on Broadway.

The performance I saw in Detroit was apparently their first full run through of the show, so my experience with the show maybe a bit skewed. I honestly was really looking forward to it after watching the Melbourne proshot, but was underwhelmed. Plus ALW rewrote my one of my favorite songs in the show and that took me right out of it. I can't see this going to Broadway.

If you're referring to "The Beauty Underneath," I totally agree. The decision to re-write and (in my opinion) turn it into an inferior version of the best song of the score still baffles me. (The new intro paying homage to the "The Phantom of the Opera" title song was brilliant, though).

I went in very familiar with the Australian proshot and was totally taken out of the moment when I heard the re-write.

Just watch either of these on repeat instead of a full production.

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. Luckily we still have the original recording with Ramin singing it.

Why should you let other people shame you for what you like? As RuPaul famously said, "Unless they're paying your rent, pay them b!tches no mind".

If Love Never Dies ever comes to Broadway, I'll be booking the two shows back-to-back.

I will absolutely be doing the same! I get a lot of flack for loving this show for much, but why should other people get to decide what I enjoy? Sheesh! Saw it on tour, am still hoping that it comes to Broadway so I can indulge a bit.

I'd go see it also, would be great if they could get it into a theatre close to the Majestic (like the Broadhurst). I think if they want to spend $$$ on it then they should, and let the tourists decide if it will last or not.

I would definitely be booking both back to back.

It really is unfortunate that they changed beauty underneath. I really loved the original

In the recent Paper Mill Playhouse "World Premiere" of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Unmasked he did concede that this remains one of his more controversial shows with a majority of the critics hating it but that it has done very well in the Australian production.  The fact that it did tour in the US (and I remember reading that year it was considered one of the more lucrative tours on the road) and has toured Japan and now a "World tour" with basically the same production, it must be doing well enough for these productions to keep popping up.  Particularly with the lack of Broadway/West End "hit" status.  I'm still unsure if he'll take the risk of it making a Broadway debut.  The lack of houses for it would be one detriment.  And with all eyes set on "Cinderella" I doubt he'd want major negative press prior to that.  But wouldn't doubt if it makes a return visit to the West End at some point so that he could have three (maybe 4) on the boards again (if Joseph hangs around again after the summer run)

It really needs an intimate feeling house with alot of head space above the stage to keep the original Aussie design and not the tour version, not many of those houses come up to often, Shubert would be a good example, while Broadhurst would be a tight fit for the whole tower and bridge thing, St. James would be way too massive to fill.

The Beauty Underneath took me out of the show i both the original London production and the US Tour because it is so heinously AWFUL.  Seriously, one of ALW's worst.  Rewriting bits of it wasn't going to help.  It's like removing lumps out of sour milk to try and make it taste better.  And adding the new POTO bit at the beginning was like a neon sign attempting to point out the obvious.  He wanted another creepy contemporary-sounding song for the Phantom to sing whilst leading an innocent through his lair.  I don't actually hate the show and I think much of the music is quite beautiful, but The Beauty Underneath needs to be cut and the entire scene rethought, rewritten and rescored.  GAWD.  The only thing worse than hearing the song was seeing the London staging of it.

Mark Harris’ article for the vulture was illuminating and very concerning.

Broadway has to start from scratch, with high unemployment and lack of tourism due to Covid 19, Broadway has to chase every buck, not that it didn’t anyway, they’ve to go harder now.

I would think that Producers would be now reluctant to spend money, they would want to test the market - I would be shocked if the Britney Spears and Michael Jackson musical does happen anytime soon, other shows may get shelved. Producers like tourists need confidents too.

So here’s a crapshoot Love Never Dies could be an ideal show to get Broadway up and running, nice and gentle show that may bridge to the bigger shows eventually, once this dreadful virus has gone.
