My daughter (11) and I are coming up in late March and we weren't going to make it a theater trip, but now that it's getting closer I'm realizing that I absolutely want it to be a theater trip (at least a little bit!). I want her to experience an off Broadway show, so I think we're going to see She Persisted, The Musical at the Atlantic Theater.

Other than that, I definitely want to see Jagged Little Pill (just me, I think she's too young for this one) and SIX. We can probably do one more, and I can't decide what it should be. I think she would be equally happy to see Beetlejuice or Frozen. I loved the movie Moulin Rouge, should that be in the running? Mrs. Doubtfire will be in previews, but I know nothing about that one.

She has seen Wicked, Aladdin, Cursed Child and The Lion King. She's dying to see Mean Girls but I'm fairly certain that will be coming to our town in 20/21 and we will have season tickets. Unfortunately our theatre isn't announcing their 20/21 season until the day we're leaving NYC.

Thoughts? I'm definitely going to buy SIX ahead of time, and probably JLP too. If I decide on Beetlejuice, I was thinking of maybe waiting to try the lottery and/or rush.

At her age I wouldn’t do Beetlejuice. It’s a fun show but it definitely has its raunchy bits. I’d go with Doubtfire. It should be great and at her age I bet it could be super enjoyable.

Oh ok- the show faqs say appropriate for 10 and up, so I didn't think it'd be an issue! I'm pretty liberal with what I let her watch (most sexual innuendos go right over her head), but maybe I'll wait and see what people are saying once Doubtfire starts up.

I definitely agree on Mrs. Doubtfire, I loved that movie when I was a kid so I think it's a good family show.

Hadestown is also a really good show if she's into mythology!

It obviously depends on each specific child, but I think Beetlejuice is fine for most 11-year-olds.  Yes, there's some raunchy humor and a bit of language, but nothing most 11-year-olds won't have heard before.  They both will tour, so you'll likely have a chance to see both on the road.  Based strictly on the Broadway casts, I'd recommend Beetlejuice more.

As for Mrs. Doubtfire and Moulin Rouge, if you or your daughter enjoy the films, they're probably a safe bet.  I'm in the vast minority that felt Hadestown was extremely overrated (stunning to look at, but not much depth to it), but clearly most others love it, so odds are you'd enjoy that as well.  Really, with any of the options, whatever sounds the most interesting to you and your daughter.  Nothing that isn't worth seeing, but also nothing that you couldn't catch on the road later and be just as pleased with there.

Definitely not Beetlejuice, there are many f-bombs and a lot of raunchiness.

Has she seen The Lion King? The costumes are breathtaking.

My 11 year old LOVED Beetlejuice. She liked it much more than Frozen. She also loved Mean Girls and Hadestown. I went to JLP without her, and was happy I did. The subject-matter was way too mature. On deck for us is Six, Moulin Rouge, and Mrs.Doubtfire Have fun!!

Beetlejuice wasn't one of my favorites but I do think it's worth seeing for Alex Brightman. Frozen actually has an excellent tour cast so if comes to your town, I'd see it there. The Broadway and touring versions should be nearly identical now.

I also think Mrs. Doubtfire will be a good option. SIX will be a lot of fun too and I agree that tickets should be bought in advance.

Thanks, it always helps to hear from another tween parent! I'm guessing she will probably love any of the shows you mentioned. I wanted to make sure none of them were being completely panned on the boards, but it sounds like most are being well-received.

Thanks to all for your input!

Spot on advice.  My 11 year old and 5 year old daughters both thoroughly enjoyed seeing it last spring.  So much so that they begged to see it again, which we did, and they were just as enthralled the second time around.  It didn’t hurt that Eva wasn’t sick the second time around and she killed her big act II song.
