I think Evans can definitely act the part very well. Playing slime balls isn’t what people associate him with, but when he does it, he does it really well. I don’t know if he can sing or not, but Orin isn’t a super demanding role when it comes to vocals, so he’ll probably be fine.
I’m not entirely sure about Porter as Audrey II. I can see it working, but I wonder if his higher tenor voice will have the right malice. I’ve yet to hear him when he did it in 2003, but it’s worth noting that his interpretation could’ve greatly changed in that time. I think he has the potential to be great in the part, but I could see it not really working at the same time. I’ll keep my mind open about his casting.

I'm expecting that this remake will be departure from the 1986 film and the stage production. Greg Berlanti is known for his fresh, updated, gay-ish takes on well-known properties, such as his CW shows (Riverdale, Arrow, Flash, Supergirl). The songs will remain, but I'm assuming the screenplay will be different enough to justify its existence, as well as making casting comparisons irrelevant.

In regards to Billy Porter’s vocals, it’s not like Levi Stubbs sang the role in the same basement dwelling bass that Ron Taylor sang it in on the original recording, and his work was brilliant in the film. Not to mention that people are often clamoring to hear Audrey II voiced by a woman in stage productions nowadays (which I think the Regents Park production did, if I’m not mistaken).

Judging Billy Porter’s hypothetical performance based on bootlegs from a production nearly 20 years ago that was deemed to be broken enough all around that only one actor was retained for the subsequent production does seem like a pretty quick rush to judgment.

Gorgeous as in highly photogenic. Talented in other areas of performance. Terrible casting overall.
