Six or Girl from the North Country

Hello everyone. I’m struggling between Six or Girl From The North Country as my last show this Spring. Looking for advice.
 
Last Fall I saw Moulin Rouge, Tina, & The Inheritance.  This Spring I’ve got tickets to Take Me Out, Flying Over Sunset, Caroline or Change, The Lehman Trilogy & Company.
 
Was leaning towards GFTNC as I like Bob Dylan & enjoyed both Once and The Band’s Visit. But after reading the preview discussions, I’m have some doubts. Six is also intriguing (and clearly enjoyed by those who have seen it thus far).

I’ve got pros/cons for each & like to catch the productions most likely to receive nominations. So is there a clear choice here? If not, which is more likely to generate attention at Tony time?

I'd say Six is the Tony favorite for best musical and a lock for best original score.  Maybe that helps.

Each will have some nominations. Six will definitely tour; Girl...probably not.

Hadestown is a great show, but I’ve seen both last Spring & Fall.

I have not seen "North Country" yet but I can tell you there is very little "there" there in "Six." It's fun, the performers are great and the songs are lively but characters never emerge.

They are such different types of shows.

Although reviews on the board for GFTNC have been harsh, I love the show, especially the Toronto/West End cast) I find it to be a beautiful and haunting play with music.

Now, judging from the list of shows you’ve already lined up for your upcoming trip, I’m in full agreement with others that you should go for SIX. I loved it when I saw it on London and hope to see it again when I’m in NYC in the spring.

I’ll follow on what Scott19 said, not only they are very different shows, I would even say they are complete opposites of one another...

Six is fun, loud and bright, it’s just a great night at the theater. Girl From the North Country is more serious, it’s more dark visually and thematically, and if you know what you are getting into, it can also be a great night at the theater.

I haven’t posted my thoughts on the GFTNC thread, but the show has grown on me tremendously since I saw it earlier in the week... it does feel like a play with music, but it’s beautiful and it has some phenomenal moments with amazing acting and singing.

Thanks for the insight. Some very helpful information.

I'm clearly torn. I enjoy all types of theatre (musicals, plays, drama, comedy), but tend to favor those shows that have some depth or challenge thought.  And, for musicals, have a great score!

On the other hand, “Girl” is dark with some nice musical moments strung together by characters we don’t care about and countless plot lines that are briefly explored but never tied up.

I saw Girl FTNC in London- two years ago- was bored and disappointed- it is not compelling, or even particularly interesting- it did not pull me in at all- I would not recommend it.

I’m very split from the crowd on this. I saw the gfnc at The Public and loved it. Six- I saw in Chicago. Two polar opposite shows. Six is loud and like a rock concert - very short at like 85 minutes. It’s ALL FLUFF. Dear God, it is not Tony award worthy- but a lot of fun. The book on gfnc at the Public was a bit of a mess- but I was engrossed in the retelling of Dylan’s music. I was not bored, and could have literally gone to the show 4 hours later to see it again.
Six if you want concert like fun- Dylan is somber and beautiful - but you would need to be in the mood.

Six isn't fluff IMO. There's a lot of depth and serious issues behind the fun, especially if you're a woman. I cried the first time I listened to the score.

Six is better just overall. It's fun, it does not drag, and it's high energy the whole time.

I begrudgingly went to Six last night and thoroughly enjoyed it, Bottom line, this is a character driven show where the players tell their individual stories rather than A story (which is not a knock). Great songs, performers, energy.

Like other posters have said, GFNC is probably on the opposite end of the spectrum from Six (and that is not a commentary on the quality of either show). I envision GFNC to be more overtly dramatic, haunting, and more somber (again, not a knock on either).

Even though I have not seen GFNC yet (so I base my comments on GFNC on consensus of other posters), I don’t think you can lose choosing either one. If you hope for touring, Six seems likely with its low running cost while GFNC may have to score big to make a tour viable.

I haven't seen SIX but having seen TGFTNC I have to say: go see SIX. Girl was depressing and disappointing. The cast, especially the amazing Mare Winningham, is first rate, but the writing, direction, and use of the music never quite come up with anything original or involving. I loved the final song and the Doctor's final brief monologue: those moments had me sobbing. The problem was the 2 hours and 40 minutes before that. Several people in my row didn't come back from intermission. I stayed for Mare.

SIX is perfect for a night out, with great music, wonderful performers and a well written show (some of the best songs we've heard in years!). We saw TGFTNC in London and enjoyed it, but it's a much darker piece of theater than SIX. I think it depends on what else you are seeing during your trip. If you want to be blown away by six amazing actresses and leave the theater on a high or if you want an evening that is a little bit depressing and dark. Hope that helps!
