He was among 5 people who were killed when a helicopter crashed around 10 am this morning. Even if you aren’t a sports fan (as I myself am not), its hard to deny that he's been a pretty major influence on a lot of people. May he rest peacefully. 41 is so young.

And as we now know his daughter passed in the crash also.

Amazing that there have been no comments on this thread. A few years back there would have been many.

Maybe because he was accused of rape and settled civil suit.

I doubt that is the reason.

I don't even watch basketball and I've been tearing up ever since the news broke reading all the reactions to the news. Unthinkable. Just devastating.

I don't either but I know who a lot of the players are just from TV coverage.

This just seemed to come out of the blue. Shocking and very sad.

I'm a huge basketball fan. I was actually surprised this thread showed up on here. Kobe Bryant had a 20 year career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He started playing for the NBA straight out of high school at the age of 19! He was a living legend.

If I would to break it down to you folks in Broadway terms, Kobe Bryant was the Stephen Sondheim of basketball. That's how major this loss is. And I count myself among his many fans who are mourning his loss, his daughters and the others who perished in this horrible accident.

Yeah....helicopter crashes are kind of like that. He was a legend in the game and an amazing role model to kids. He did so much in the community, and was truly a team player. What a great loss.

I would say Kobe was the LMM of basketball. Jordan is probably Sondheim. Magic Johnson might be Richard Rogers. Lebron is someone big too. Not sure who to compare him to.

But yeah, my heart goes out to his wife and two other daughters.

Yep, can't imagine losing your husband and a child on the same day. She most be devastated and two of her other children are very young.

He actually had 4 daughters. Natalia, Gianna, Bianka, and Capri. Incredibly tragic.

It's honestly so surreal. It still doesn't feel real. I was speaking with a coworker on this today, neither of us follow basketball but we both felt it. I remember my whole body was in shock when I saw the headline and I thought it was a prank. I realized he was one of those icons that defines America, and after reading comments online, I feel like he had so much left to give. Those are the saddest kinds of deaths. I didn't know the first thing about him besides his name, but I started watching some interviews of him from when he won his Oscar and he seemed like the chillest dude.

I agree, I was watching an interview with him on YouTube and he just seemed like an amazing person. It's surreal. And the fact that this could have been avoided if the pilot made a different decision makes it all the more heartbreaking.

.Just heard this morning why he had the helicopter and it broke my heart. It seems that he got it because he was tired of being stuck in traffic trying to get to his daughters' events. He evidently missed some or was late to some. He realized he could afford it so he got it so he would never be late for any of his children's events.

Not trying to burst the bubble of good feelings but that's not really accurate. He had the helicopter for years. With all his back and knee injuries over the years, it made sitting in a car in heavy Los Angeles traffic for two hours getting to games in the city from his home in Orange County too painful so he got the copter to make the trips quicker and easier. This was well known throughout the L.A. sports community. Of course he continued to use the copter after he retired to get around L.A. easier including getting to his daughters' events but he didn't buy the helicopter to avoid being late to his kids events. With all the legendary things he accomplished to reflect back on and the obvious love he had for his daughters, not sure why people feel the need to make up stories like this.

I have read that it may take upwards of a year for the cause of the accident to be determined.  I have also read that part of the cause may have been due to low-lying clouds or fog.  I live 80 miles south of Los Angeles.  It is common here in Southern California along the coast for fog to suddenly appear, especially in the morning hours.  I have also noticed that if there is fog where I live, there often is fog in the L.A. area.  On the morning of the accident, I had to postpone my daily walk for a few hours due to dense fog.  It simply wasn't safe to be out on the city streets.  I will not be surprised if fog or clouds are determined to be a contributing factor to this tragedy.

Whatever the cause, we have lost nine good souls.

I think the reference was to his continued personal use of the helicopter after he retired in 2016. That article really doesn't say if it was his or maybe the team paid for it for his health. No matter what, he was using it in this instance for his child.

This is standard practice for the NTSB. They release a preliminary report first and then the final report gets released about 1-2 years later. If you look at past crashes, this is the norm.

I've been thinking about this crash since it happened. I keep thinking about the Altobelli family in particular where both parents and the younger sister died leaving behind a 16 year old daughter and a 29 year old son. I hope the son becomes his sister's legal guardian. They seem close from all the articles I've read.
