Wicked Movie 2025??

Just heard a interview with Stephen Schwartz who said the movie is coming but not sure when. I know Universal has posted it will be December 2021, and they own the rights to the property. With Cats being a complete failure, I don't think it will happen in 2021. Every interview Schwartz keeps say they are working on the script, they are working on the script.....

Just want to know thoughts on this. I would add if they are serious about 2021 they would announce casting this summer or later this fall. They can start filming in January like Les Miz and still have it out by December...

What do people think? DO you think it will release as planned??

"Posted" means absolutely nothing.    It could begin production in 6 months or 6 years.  Until "they" are ready to tell us, all anyone can do is guess.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

And just because it's in development, doesn't mean it's coming out soon. There are dozens and dozens of reasons why projects end up in what's called 'development hell'.

I have it on absolutely no authority and no inside information that the film version opens October 20, 2023.

Yes that is the interview with Elaine Paige...

My personal view is that they will start in January. They have pushed many musical movies through at the last minute. Casting will follow once they announce when they are to start filming.

Look at West Side Story and In the Heights....which I believe both will be huge hits.

I think Universal will try to keep 2021 so they can be a contender for the award season, and if they do it right like Chicago did they can win some or a lot of awards.

No offense...but your "personal view" is kind of irrelevant (unless you are bankrolling the movie?)

Based on its track record, I think they'll announce a date soon. Then they'll postpone. And the trend will continue. I agree with whomever said it would be a project that would infamously stay in "development hell". I don't see anything being announced anytime soon.

First, My personal view is just that my Personal View....You do not have to agree with it, but I have my right to put it out there...I am a lover of musicals, stage and film and I can put I like.... We can debate on the show or shows but no one view is the only view on this forum.

I think Universal will be the one who decides if the musical will be made in 2021...They own major shares on the show...they own the rights..Do I think it will be 2021....not a chance! Something will have to happen in the coming months to change my view on this....but it will happen if Universal says it will...

Too many people want the stage production, which I love...to be the film version...Not going to happen... They will keep the same plot, songs, add new scenes...more of a backstory....

If In the Heights does very well I think they might , just might speed it up...But they are in no hurry...which I wish they would...

It's all pretty interesting... this last time they bumped it they made a BIG deal about dating it for 2021.  Before then, it really felt like a soft date.  This time, it felt much more permanent.  The reason?  A major movie studio is not going to sit out an entire holiday movie-going season without releasing at least one big release.  If you look at Universal's slate of releases in 2021, there is NOTHING dated for late 2021 except for Wicked... so either they are planning on pushing it through, or they plan on dating something else - but they would need to do it relatively soon and get that replacement through development, casting, filming, etc.

It seems like they've been talking about this for a decade, I don't think it's ever going to happen, unfortunately. I LOVE that photo of Gaga though. Wowza.

By the time they will film the movie at this rate, robots will replace real actors and Elphaba and Glinda will be played by them.

I'm sure it will happen but don't hold your breath. I agree that they need to think of a new way of looking at the story to re-tell it on screen. It works great on stage but, as we all know, that's not always the case on screen.  It takes a long time to get the visual language right for a film. 3/4 of the work is figuring out what to do not how to do it.

And then they have to price out the production designer's plans - and then, someone will take a hard look at that budget and make a decision.  Which likely will be to go back to the production designer and say "Can we do this for less?"

.... not a surprise.  I would have expected another delay even without the effects of COVID-19.  I'm betting it moves to the holiday corridor of 2023, with 2022 a slight possibility.  I think Universal will release this around Christmas regardless of the year...

Lea Michele has only had one successful TV role and no successful movies. Her music career fizzled out and she isn’t a Broadway darling anymore. She doesn’t even have the likability factor when being interviewed. While there’s no denying she’s insanely talented I doubt she’ll be the lead of a big budget / highly anticipated movie like this.
