Lighthouse deserved more nods, it is a masterpiece.

Lupita should've been there over Ervio.

Pugh should've been nominated for Midsommar, she gave the best performance male or female of the year.

Rebecca Ferguson should've also got a nod for her amazing turn in Doctor Sleep.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood shouldn't have been nominated for anything.

It was not a good year for female or black filmmakers when compared to last year hence the lack of nominees in technical categories. Let's hope next year is better for them.

Hopefully Parasite sweeps the biggies, but it won't. It'll be the same usual boring old white men club that wins every time they fart out their next mediocre boy movie x

I hated marriage story and the lighthouse.

Really enjoyed parasite and the joker though.

My opinions: 

1) While I wasn't a big fan of the film (mostly the second half), I do agree that Lupita should have been nominated over Erivo. 

2) While there is an uproar, I agree with the Academy that Greta Gerwig should not have been nominated since the direction was nothing special. 

3) Even though it wasn't going to happen, I also wish Rebecca Ferguson would have been nominated for "Doctor Sleep." 

4) In regards to the uproar about the Oscar nominees that I am seeing on Facebook and other places......I, legit, want to ask the people complaining if they have actually seen any of these movies or performances (which I know a good deal have not) or are they just jumping on the bandwagon.  You can't say, "Jennifer Lopez should be nominated" when you didn't see her performance.  I agree that Hollywood needs to be more diverse BUT you shouldn't get nominated to meet a quota or prevent backlash either.

I'll call it for Ho or Tarantino as Best Director, with probably the Tarantino winning Best Picture.

I'd say that PARASITE is just exactly useless enough to win both Best Foreign Film AND Best Picture, but I doubt that's gonna happen.  Unless it does.

I doubt Parasite will win. I can see a world in which Joker or Jojo Rabbit takes the top prize because the Academy sucks that way. If not then probably The Irishman. I don't really see any of the others winning.

While I love JoJo Rabbit I, personally, think 1917 will end up winning best picture with a possible best director for Mendes.

It's a somewhat ironic and cruel twist of fate that most great directors end up winning awards for their worst work instead of their best.

The fact he can win anything for OUATIH and yet didn't win for Pulp Fiction (and beaten by Forrest frickin Gump at that) is a travesty.

Not trying to be nitpicky or call you out or anything, but just to clarify, Bong is actually his surname--in Korea (as in many Asian countries) the surname comes before the given name.

Parasite was the best film of the year to me, and I'm very happy to see how well it did, and I'll be rooting for it to take home best picture. I'm hoping Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig both take home screenplay awards. The fact that Phoenix is beating Driver for so many awards is just appalling to me. Best actress and best supporting actor are both really weak categories this year.

And here's my list of snubbed actors: Awkwafina, Alan Alda, Robert Deniro, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o, and Zhao Shuzhen

I also don’t get the love for Joker, it was a one note performance. He started crazy and stayed that way for the endless two and bit hours. That film was a chore to get through, no real story arc , crazy , crazier , craziest. A real head scratcher on the love that’s been piled on.

I guess Sam Mendes is a lock for directing 1917 after winning the Directors Guild award and the film itself seems like a pretty big favorite for Best Picture. I liked the film overall but I admit to feeling a bit bummed that it might win the biggest awards. The direction is a gimmick, and not even a new gimmick. The plot itself doesn't really touch on larger themes about the futility of that war, and it's not much of a character study either. It's deliberately a small story of a reluctant hero and it gets a little stupid in its final third. It feels like Mendes is getting the directing nods because it was most directed film. Again, I liked it when I saw it despite some qualms. 

But in a year that includes Parasite, a brilliant and rich film that had much more to say, and even Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a flawed but thoroughly entertaining movie that nonetheless left me feeling melancholy, or the Little Women remake, 1917 feels like such a typical, safe choice even among the nominees.

I'm not so sure the voting system won't work in 1917's favor too. Parasite seems to have emerged as the lead challenger, but I just have my doubts that a bunch of people will have it as their #2 choice behind, say, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Joker, or Jojo Rabbit.  (I realize that some prognosticators and a betting site has Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as their choice, because of Tarantino and Hollywood honoring itself and all, but I can't remember a three-film race where the third film wins. Maybe I'm not remembering.)

It seems like Parasite will get its share of #1 votes, but I can easily imagine others ranking it lower because of the language barrier. An older, more conservative voter might go with 1917 and then a film like The irishman.

Seems like it's setting up this way...

Best Picture - 1917 (with Parasite as a possible upset candidate)

Director: Sam Mendes for 1917

Acting awards: the actors who have have been winning everything

Best Original Screenplay: Tarantino (Bong a possible upset candidate)

And that's why I shouldn't predict anything.A Paradise sweep in the major categories... wow.

I probably shouldn't have underestimated the obvious enthusiasm displayed by the audience when Bong beat Quentin Tarantino for Best Original Screenplay. By the time of the ceremony, that wasn't a huge upset, but Tarantino doing his best work in decades - and not considered a serious contender for Best Director or Best Screenplay - seemed like a decent bet against a film in a foreign language.

But the Best Director award clinched it. Sam Mendes had won every precursor award he was eligible to win. For Bong to win meant it was going to be a sweep of the major awards - something I did not anticipate. The little rebellion by the stars in the audience when the director turned out the lights on the Best Picture speeches was cool too.

It's such a rare thing - more like a fluke - when the Best Picture goes to the film I thought was actually the best movie that I'm having trouble adjusting to it. I liked 1917, especially the first two-thirds, but it was a small story that got a little stupid during its final third. I certainly had a soft spot for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and enjoyed it much more than I was expecting (even on a return visit). But Paradise was not just a thought-provoking film relevant to our times but a very entertaining movie.

I was overjoyed at the love and best picture win for Parasite. In the Oscar pool I was a part of, I was one of four people (out of 20 total) to predict it to win, launching me to 4th place out of everyone. I had a gut feeling it would pull it off and I’ll be damned it did.

You're absolutely right.  Get Out did NOT get 4 nominations and a win for Original Screenplay.

The same can be said about the two popes' Jonathan Pryce (lead actor) and Anthony Hopkins (supporting actor).  Both are lead roles.  Even the title says so.

The film centered only the journey of Pryce's character and his story.  It was pretty obvious he was the lead.

Agreed.  And a win for Production Design?!?!  Ugh.

As for subs, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Christian Bale for Ford v Ferrari.  His performance elevated the film from being a rather generic Ron Howard knockoff.

The production design for Once upon...was stunning; I don't understand why any one would be surprised? Beautiful recreation of the era.

I was pretty happy with all the winners last night. Each category seemed pretty well deserved for the most part. No huge surprises in the acting categories. I haven't seen Parasite yet but I noticed my local theater is still showing it so hopefully I can catch it this weekend.

Somebody needs to give the translator for the Parasite team a raise. She was just terrific at remembering those long speeches and then translating them to English.

Biggest snub of the night was to Netflix. They had the most nominations and the least wins. It was also weird not seeing any of their ads since Disney wouldn't allow it.

Snubs are intentional.  Do you truly think people were thinking "I'm not voting fer no GAWLDURN Netlifx movie!" each time they voted in whatever category, except for the categories they won?  There was a lot of speculation about what Marriage Story could possibly win and American Factory was pretty lucky to snag the win over For Sama, but there were no early indicators that The Irishman or The Two Popes were going to rake in a wheelbarrow of statues for the studio or anything.

1917 won what it should've, but in no way was it B.P/Director worthy.

Irishman won exactly what it deserved...nothing.

Other than that I thought everything else was spot on apart from Brad Pitt who should've been nominated for Ad Astra but would never have won for that so they put him up for OUATIH instead.

So happy for Parasite, amazing film and the first to actually deserve it's B.P win since Schindler's List IMHO x

I thought Pitt was bad in Ad Astra. He won for OUATIH because he's well liked and has had a good long career but he's not a great actor and he'd probably be the first to admit that.
