Cabaret Scenes Review: "Joining her in a clever opening number with that title were upcoming series rotating hosts Hillary Rollins (the series producer) and Alexis Gach. The song “The Right to Cabaret,” with lyrics by Rollins and music by Howard Pearl, detailed humorously what the trio had or had not done to earn “the right to cabaret.” The voices of these first-class vocalists blended beautifully in the opener. "

 

MaryJo Mundy, the highly acclaimed and beloved cabaret singer and founder of the longest running open mic at the famed Gardenia, hosts the 3rd night of what celebrates and fosters musical theatre/cabaret performers, while also showcasing her own remarkable talent. On the third Saturday of every month Ms. Mundy (co-hosted monthly by Alexis Gach and singer/songwriter/producer Hillary Rollins  throws a “cabaret party” on-stage at the Gardenia along with three guest performers. 

Whenever possible, one of those guests will be an “emeritus” artist (someone with a long, established cabaret career who will sing but also share their wit and wisdom about a life in this specialized art form); one will be an “up and comer” (a new, young star-of tomorrow) and one will be a singer/songwriter whose original songs both contrast and compliment the classic cabaret/theatre songs presented by the rest of the line-up.

In addition, each show features “Sing by the Seat of Your Pants” – a single song slot where a surprise guest is chosen from the audience (out of a volunteer lottery) to come up and wow the crowd with their own moment in the spotlight. (Audience members interested in participating in lottery must sign-up before the start of the show and come prepared with charts for a choice of three different tunes in their key.) 

But don’t worry – if you don’t win the lottery, or singing solo isn’t your “thing” – all audience members will have a chance to belt their heart out, share the fun, and feel the community love for cabaret when the entire room ends each evening with a rousing Broadway sing-along! 

On the 18th, it's Alexis's turn to play main host, will be director/singer/actor Gary Imhoff, Rowin Kahn with special guest, songwriter, Harriet Schock, with Michael Sobie on piano. 

A triple threat talent, Gary Imhoff starred in the West Coast Premier of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins and in the West Coast Premier of the long-running hit, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change for which he went on to join the original company in New York City at the Westside Theatre. A familiar face on TV and Film, Gary has guest starred in over 30 television productions and pilots spanning from HBO’s Carnivale, Monk and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to now famous classic episodes of Barney Miller and Taxi. He recurred as Curtis Estabrook on the long-running hit series Falcon Crest, guest starred in numerous episodes of Eight Is Enough, as well as The Waltons, One Day At A Time, The Powers of Matthew Starr, How The West Was Won - to name a few. Gary had the extraordinary pleasure of starring opposite two of televisions greats, Lucille Ball in the NBC special Lucy Moves to NBC and Milton Berle in the television pilot Moscow and Vine.  

  Grammy nominated songwriter, Harriet Schock, began her 47 year career In 1973, when she recorded her first album as a singer for 20th Century Records, containing her song, "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady," later covered by pop singer, Helen Reddy. Her LPs as a singer include, “American Romance,” and “Rosebud,” produced by the legendary Nik Venet, Harriet Schock "Live from Fairfax to Pasadena," and “Breakdown on Memory Lane,” released in 2013. Her songs have been recorded by Smokey Robinson, Roberta Flack, Helen Reddy, Lee Greenwood, Johnny Mathis, Syreeta, Carl Anderson, Gloria Loring, Vikki Carr, Manfred Mann, Vesica Pisces, Mireille Mathieu, Letta Mbulu, Nancy Wilson, Simon Lynge, Elaine, Lambert & Karl, Jeannie Kendall and many others. She also wrote "Dreaming" recorded by Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid), a favorite among Little Mermaid fans.  With Misha Segal, Harriet co-wrote "First Time on A Ferris Wheel," for the Motown film, "Berry Gordy's "The Last Dragon," recorded for the film by the great Smokey Robinson and the late Syreeta, besides being performed by Nancy Wilson, Carl Anderson and Gloria Loring. Harriet co-wrote all the songs for "The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking," the animated "Secret Garden" and Universal’s “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus," while other songs from been featured in numerous other films and TV shows, including the current Emmy-winning PBS series, “Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks” for which Harriet co-wrote the theme song with Geoff Levin. Harriet was part of the ensemble cast of “Just 45 Minutes from Broadway, and two songs she wrote were featured on the Jeannie Kendall CD, one of which was nominated for AC/Hot AC Single of the Year in 2005 by New Music Weekly Magazine.  Harriet taught songwriting for two years at USC in the undergraduate program, and has lectured, taught and been published in songwriting magazines, nationwide. She has been teaching songwriting for 33 years…one-on-one private lessons, group classes for the Songwriters Guild of America as well as privately and on-line courses. Her book, Becoming Remarkable: For Songwriters And Those Who Love Songs is comprised of 48 of her articles and is published by Blue Dolphin, Becoming Remarkable is available in stores nationwide and online. Harriet was honored in 2007 by L.A. Women In Music for her career accomplishments and contributions.

Rowin Omar Khan is a  self-described singing storyteller from Newark, New Jersey. After studying jazz composition at Five Towns college he broadened his horizons as a session vocalist at countless NYC studios and provided BGV for various artists across various genres.  As a new LA transplant he is eager to explore  opportunities to  write, record and perform meaningful music.

Hillary's company "Hillary Rollins Presents" has produced or co-produced numerous cabaret and stage shows, mostly in New York and LA for artists and songwriters such as Amanda McBroom, Julie Gold, Michele Brourman, Ken Hirsch, Steve Dorff, John Bucchino, Christine Lavin, Daniel Cainer, and more. Her series, “Songs From The Source”, created with singer/songwriter Michele Brourman, has featured such luminary songwriters as Mike Stoller, Allee Willis, Alan Rich and Jud Friedman,

Marsha Malamet, Lori Lieberman, Lindy Robbins and many others to raise money for The Songwriter’s Lifeline at The Actor’s Fund.

She has also executive produced three music CD’s, Christine Lavin & Friends Live at McCabes, singer MaryJo Mundy’s tribute to the music of Laura Nyro, The Fourteenth Confession and the newest studio album (about to be released) from singer/songwriter Jodi Siegel.
