With a new decade just days away, I thought we could share plans and dreams of what shows we are seeing, or want to visit, on Broadway.

January has several closures - Tootsie, Oklahoma, Slave Play, Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, and Waitress, to name a few - and a number of highly anticipated shows are coming in during the first few months of 2020 - Company, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Girl From The North Country, Six, The Minutes, and Caroline, or Change, among many others.

So who’s got trips planned and what are we seeing in 2020?

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone, and may all of your theatre dreams come true!

Plus, I’m seeing most of what coming through Detroit. Should be a packed year I can’t wait.

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I have a supposed work trip next month. Actually, scheduled to fly in early next Friday so I can fit in more shows. I say “supposed”, because our site coordinator didn’t read contract or multiple emails thoroughly and has messed up things on her end so we may have to postpone the training. However, I’m committted to seeing my 10 shows even if I have to rebook using hotel points and airline miles.

Here’s my schedule:

Friday, January 3 - The Sound Inside (Purchased with discount code)

Saturday, January 4 (matinee) - Oklahoma! (Purchased with discount code)

Saturday, January 4 (evening) - Slave Play (Purchased with discount code)

Sunday, January 5 (matinee and evening) - The Inheritance Pts. 1 & 2 (Purchased with discount code)

Monday, January 6 (evening) - West Side Story (Cheaper regularly priced ticket - far left front orchestra)

Tuesday, January 7 (evening) - Hadestown (“cheaper” mezzanine seat)

Wednesday, January 8 (evening) - Tina! (Purchased for $54 via Audience Rewards)

Thursday, January 9 (evening) - Jagged Little Pill (Purchased for $54 via Audience Rewards)

Friday (evening), January 10 - Grand Horizons (Purchased for $48 via Audience Rewards)"

Also, have a ticket to see Miss Saigon (my first time!) the Tuesday after I return from NYC.

I also hope to be able to make it back to see:

  • Girl from the North Country
  • Six
  • Company
  • The Lehman Trilogy
  • Caroline, or Change
  • PLAZA SUITE
  • How I Learned to Drive
  • Take Me Out
  • Assassins

After three great trips in 2019, which were to celebrate my BIG #60, only one trip scheduled back to Broadway in 2020: for the closing show of Beetlejuice. Got to have my priorities! lol :)

Shows that I haven’t seen and have tickets for:
-Slava’s Snowshow
-Come From Away*
-Tina
-A Soldier’s Play
-Caroline, or Change
-American Buffalo
-Beetlejuice
-Six
-West Side Story
-The Music Man
-Ain’t Too Proud

Of the above, I’m most excited to see A Solider’s Play so I’ll most likely book my return ticket on my train home the same day.

Shows that I’ve already seen and have tickets for:
-Hamilton
-Hadestown

There’s a few understudies I’d like to see again next year so I’ll see Hadestown at least 2 more times to see both Persephone understudies, and Frozen one more time to see an Anna understudy.

*EDITS

-Edited add Come From Away. Plans changed and instead of seeing Ain’t Too Proud, I’ll see CFA as my second of two shows (thank you Amtrak and schedule changes). I’m keeping Ain’t Too Proud on my list though because I do have a ticket for it already. I’ll just post date and hope they honor on the day I try to go.

There are (right now) two shows I’d like to see but do not have tickets for. They are: Donna Summer tour (Philly stop) and To Kill a Mockingbird. Donna Summer is in June and not selling well in Philly so I’ll probably just buy day of. And my plan for To Kill A Mockingbird is hopefully take a day off work in October/November and go. Assuming it’s open still.

I have tickets for Come from Away on Thursday, so I suppose that's technically my first show of 2020. On Thursday I also plan on playing the little shop lottery, and doing something at tkts if I lose. The only other show I have tickets for so far is Company, but I'd like to see Music Man, Caroline or Change, and Jagged Little Pill.

My New York dates aren't set yet, but I'd like to get to New York around Tony season. I definitely want to go, but there are fewer shows that I feel like I absolutely need to see. Then again, my opinion may change based on the buzz for things like Flying Over Sunset, etc.

Here's what I do want to see in New York:

  • Company revival
  • Six
  • Jagged Little Pill
  • Hadestown (repeat visit)
  • Lempicka (assuming it comes in this year)

Touring shows:

  • The Spongebob Musical (have tickets)
  • Mean Girls
  • The Band's Visit (saw the New York production, so it'll be a repeat visit)
  • My Fair Lady (same)

Regional / local theater in the Bay Area:

  • The Tale of Despereaux (Berkeley Rep, I have tickets)
  • Swept Away (Berkeley Rep)
  • School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play (Berkeley Rep)
  • Merrily We Roll Along (42nd Street Moon)
  • A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder (42nd Street Moon)
  • Groundhog Day (SF Playhouse. I have um, multiple tickets)
  • Follies (SF Playhouse)
  • The rest of the plays in SF Playhouse's season (Tiny Little Things, Real Women Have Curves, The Clean House - already have tickets)
  • The Full Monty (Bay Area Musicals)
  • A Chorus Line (Bay Area Musicals)
  • Toni Stone (American Conservatory Theater)

To some degree I'm more excited about the local theater, but I also know that things are going to pop up in New York throughout the year that I'll want to see. Looking forward to 2020!

I always thought I was wrong to think decades start with the year ending with “1” and I’ve seen a lot of publications doing “Best of the Decade” lists so that just furthered my assumption that I was wrong. So I read an article today (okay, half an article) and while many agree that decades run from X1 to X0, there isn’t consensus on it.

You are definitely correct that a decade starts with X1 because it doesn't start with a year zero. 1 January 2020 will be the beginning of the tenth year of the decade which started on 1 January 2011. People who write those publications need a lesson in math and logic.

I get that but then I think babies are on this earth a full year before they turn one year old. But then I think the earth isn’t like a baby. But then again wasn’t the earth once just 6 months old, too? So if so, what happens to that first year? Does it just not belong to a decade? And now I have a headache. Lol

And yes, I know the earth is older than 2019 years old. Lol
