So the lauded production of The Publics For Colored Girls is releasing their director Leah Gardner.
After many reports fights among cast members, creative team members including Martha and Camille the commercial producers have chosen to not broadcast bring Leah Gardiner to broadway.
My question here is .... what theatre could they possibly be going into?
Second, were there rumors of this going to Broadway? This is the first I'm hearing of this, but I wasn't following any threads on the show.
Third, have these fights and disputes already been discussed in the rumor mill? This is the first I'm hearing of them as well. Anyone have a source on this?
If all of this is true, and if they were to go to Broadway, they could theoretically have someone else come in to either re-mount, or re-direct the show, but I would think that Gardiner should still get some sort of credit and/or royalty for the creative stamp she left on the production. I don't know what the protocol is for this situation (I'd love to hear it, if anyone knows), but from a creative standpoint it seems like unless they also hire a new cast and design team, it would be hard to completely remove Gardiner's contributions to the show. Because traditionally the cast and design team would be making their creative decisions based on the creative vision of the director. But if her conflicts were with the other members of the creative team, it wouldn't seem fair to fire them all. So it seems like the easiest thing to do would be to transfer the production and hire someone new to re-mount the same production with some creative changes as needed, then credit Gardiner as a co-director.
As I said, I don't actually know if this is the protocol. I'm just making a guess based on what I know about the impact of a director's work on a production, and what would strike me as the easiest and most fair thing to do based on that knowledge.
It is hard to give up the source... But I will say, the two commercial producers attached for enhancement to the production are a Nelle Nugent and Ron Simons.
The Public tends to keep the commercial producers pretty quiet.
However I know from The Public, also, the agents repping the parties.
