His generosity toward Karen Mason is wonderful. I saw Mason take over for Buckley mid-performance of a Saturday matinee, and as he noted, she absolutely won over the audience. "As if I never said goodbye" stopped the show in a profound new way. It was a thrilling moment for Mason, but also for the whole company around her. The show made a strange leap forward. It must be said: one could not determine that Buckley was sick in act one. She sang the role as she always did that day. She was out for 2-4 shows afterwards. But Mason should have more respect in this biz. (Sorry about "Rebecca."
And as we discussed a few months ago, Mason is the actress who took over for Glenn Close when she was on vacation most of March, 1995. ALW inflated the box office while she took over the role, and praised her performances every night. Close was not happy with that praise for her (or the box office inflation).
Sunset is my favorite show of all time and Alan has been a great inspiration since my teenage years, and it was one of those cases where you meet your hero (as well as share dialogue with them, what the hell?!) and they turn out to be totally wonderful and giving.
And his performance was, of course, superb!
