Some paparazzi photos of Meryl, James, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells in costume from the Prom movie. It seems like they started filming this week.

I hope we get to see “performance footage” from the Eleanor Roosevelt musical in the film, it was the one thing missing from the stage version. I was so looking forward to a production number with Beth Leavel as Eleanor.

I was a big fan of The Prom on Broadway and I was so happy when they announced the movie. And I’m willing to save most of my judgements about the cast not including any of the OBC.

That being said, I’m not usually a negative person like most on here, but I am SO sick of James Corden. He’s not right for this role, and I feel like his singing is just being shoved in our faces at all possible opportunities.

Couldn’t agree more.

I’m so excited for this! Meryl will be amazing, and I think James will be able to pull it off. I wish it could be Beth and Brooks but I do understand why they needed to use big names. They should have gotten Nathan Lane to play Barry, though....

Perhaps Mr.Corden will elevate the piece to the success the show never achieved.

Very excited about the movie. I was disappointed when the musical closed last August.

Looking back at the casting (even though I was just as confused as everyone else when it was first announced), I actually think this is one of the better cast movie musicals in more recent times.  Almost all the "big actors" (Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Meryl Streep) have experience with movie musicals, and there are a few legit Broadway actors (Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose) to round out the cast.  And Jo Ellen Pellman has an incredible voice - this is her singing "My New Philosophy" from You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi3qYLh7rfmAhUurlkKHUS9A3oQwqsBMAB6BAgKEAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1NNjQHTvsJM&usg=AOvVaw3g9tDc2zY2va5GokYlr7wK

If we couldn't get the OBC, I do think this is one of the better routes the casting directors could have taken.  I mean, as much as we might not want James Corden as Barry, at least it isn't Russell Crowe. wink

Ya, Merly looks terrific! Corden has been able to make me laugh in the past, but I fear it'll be his same old schtick except now as a flamboyant gay man. I hope he's not offensive. He's also just a lot younger than Merly and it seems to be that Brooks and Beth seemed near the same age which worked well with me. Whoever suggested Nathan Lane, that is SPOT. ON. Casting!!! If we couldn't get Brooks Nathan wouldn't been my choice. I think this is nearly perfectly cast minus Corden, and Barry holds a lot of the heart in this show, lets hope he can deliver because this seems very promising.

With her back to the camera, Meryl does remind me of Beth. Like many others, I would have loved to have seen Beth reprise her role, but I can understand why they went with a movie star. It's difficult to say whom I would have gone with had the producers done what they did back in the 1950's with the movie version of "The Pajama Game" and have one of the Broadway leads repeat their role. (Janis Paige was a bigger movie name than John Raitt, but they couldn't get Sinatra, and of course, Doris Day was the queen of the box office at the time....)

Not crazy about James Corden either even though I've never seen him on stage. His TV schtick just isn't my cup of gin, so I guess I'd go for Brooks because he really brings a lot of heart to that part, but I'd still feel bad for Beth whom I've seen in so many shows since "42nd Street". I saw "The Prom" three times, the last time because I wanted to be up close and got third row orchestra after sitting in the balcony (further back) twice. It was a unique experience each time, and my viewing in the orchestra was only marred by the tears of joy I kept wiping from my face. I'm not crazy about "The Devil Wears Prada" as a movie (I'd rather Beth be Madeline Ashton in "Death Becomes Her"First Look At Meryl Streep & James Corden in The Prom Movie, but I've got my fingers crossed for Beth as the star.

I fear the resemblance will end there, particularly when she gets to the end of "The Lady's Improving".

I just listened to some of Meryl from Into the Woods...while she will NEVER be able to sing it like Beth can, I think she will be able to do the song justice.

And before we even go there, let’s remember that Donna Murphy has publicly denied that she did any dubbing for Meryl
Streep in the Into the Woods film.

I was waiting for someone to post these pictures here. Anyone know what coast they're filming on?

As I don't have Netflix, I hope there is an eventual DVD release.

I could be wrong, but my belief is that its filming in NYC. Corden cameo'd on SNL last Saturday (12/7) I believe right before he took a week off to film the movie. So I think east coast.

Don't expect a DVD release, but do expect it to run in some independent theaters for a few weeks so it can qualify for any Oscar/Golden Globe nominations.

Why wouldn't there be a DVD release?  Most significant Netflix movies and series get released on DVD.  It may take awhile (Roma is just being released next month) -- but I'm sure The Prom will eventually be on DVD).

Poor assumption on my part! Ive never seen any Netflix films be offered on DVD, but this is good to know. Netlfix should do this anyways, as not everyone has a subscription but they are indeed putting out Oscar caliber films of late, its impressive!

Well, James is still doing his show, too, so... west, one imagines.

Damn, you really do hate technology. No streaming AND you still refuse to upgrade to an HD format at least?

Hahaha, haterobics. I am a bit behind. It took me like 5 years to even get a smartphone! I do plan on investing in a Blu-Ray player at some point.

He's had guest hosts on his show though, so I don't think it confirms he's been in LA. Could still be filming there but he hasn't been hosting since they've been filming to my knowledge.

Also Ado, I wouldn't bother with a blu-ray at this point, just invest in 1 of the streaming services! Should give you the HD quality you need, plus all the content you could imagine. In 5-10 years I could see DVD's being close a thing of the past. If you makes you feel any better, I'm a millennial who only recently got a smartphone! So you''re not alone in that. I also stay far, far away from social media. You do you, mate!

Has she? Contractually I’m sure she’d have to anyway if she wanted to keep her Disney retirement payout.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
