Skip Part 2 of the Inheritance?#1
Posted: 12/8/19 at 9:11am

I got in a debate with friends last night who thought that Part 1 was a "perfect show" and that Part 2 was both long and unnecessary. I enjoyed Part 1 more, and thought it was a good book-end, but maybe not a 100% necessary book-end.

Am I crazy?

It’s the continuation of the play. That’s like asking if you should leave a show at intermission because you liked act one.

I saw Part 1 and have zero intention of seeing Part 2. I’ve gotten no pushback from friends that have seen both parts. Even the production itself by only doing 3 performances of Part 2 a week agrees.

It's a personal decision. I have a few friends who did that and instead read part 2 of the play and they seem content with that choice since they found out what eventually happened in the plot.

I think because of how many people find Part 1 a fine stand-alone piece (not sure if I entirely agree, but lots of people seem to have this opinion), I think it’s less like leaving a show at intermission (where you are leaving in the middle of one coherent piece) and more like not seeing the second movie in a series (a continuation of the story that you decide not to embark on).

Act one of “Into the Woods” is also a stand-alone piece of you don’t come back for act two (or do the junior version). Just because some people view it as a stand-alone piece doesn’t mean that it is one.

Jordan, I respect your POV on this, but even the productions website, buried on the Ticketing page, states the following:

“HOW TO BUY

The Inheritance and The Inheritance: Part 2 are separate and complete plays.

Begin your journey with The Inheritance. When you’re ready to discover the second chapter of the story, buy your tickets for The Inheritance: Part 2.”

So, yeah. It is a 2 standalone pieces and it’s not like leaving at intermission. There is nowhere on the marquee, social media, or website homepage that ever says “Parts 1 and 2,” a la Cursed Child of AiA.

Let’s just see if they’re submitting the play to the Tony Awards as two separate plays or as one.

If you can swing it, please see both parts, they are both brilliant and incredibly special.

...Ok.

I’m sorry you take such offense to people not seeing Part 2, when the production itself even validates Part 1 as a full viewing experience. My comments have not been personal attacks in any way.

I don’t give two sh*ts if people don’t see part two or only see part two. But this whole thing about them not being one show is stupid. It’s one story broken up in two different plays. If you liked the first part and don’t want to see how it ends, that’s good for you but don’t fool yourself into thinking that you’ve seen the show when you’ve only seen half of it.

I have seen part one, and intend to see part 2. That said, I am baffled by the decision to run only three part 2 performances a week. I'm also disappointed there are no matinees for part 2 (the Sunday afternoon would be ideal for many people, who'd like to do a weekend of matinees). It seems as if they want the audience to book a whole day, the marathon schedule, not feasible for a majority of ticket buyers. I'm wondering how this schedule will hold up in the difficult-to-sell winter. I'd like to see part 2 on TDF*, but it's only turned up one that I've noticed.  That could change in Jan - Feb.

*It's apparently routinely on TKTS, like part 1, including last Wednesday night when I checked (but couldn't commit the time the same day).

The other thread on The Inheritance has cycle through the whole limited # of part two performances. Let's please not do it all over again.

For what it matters, I preferred part 2 to part 1.

When I read the entire play in September (319 pages), I much preferred part 2 as well. Part 2 begins immediately, and focuses on the aftermath of two relationships and the resulting new pairings. Henry Wilcox is fascinating, and now that I've seen Hickey's take in Part 1, I feel compelled to see part 2.

We saw both parts on the same day and are glad that we did.

Not sure if you're aware already but Tony Goldwyn is taking over Hickey as Henry Wilcox for 4 months starting January 5th. I'm guessing this means the play will be extended. So I guess if you wish to see Hickey in part 2, try to see part 2 before January 5th or after Hickey returns.

Tony Goldwyn joining the cast means that all five leads of The Inheritance will be played by straight men. I find this disappointing.
