Although recorded in 1001 Arabian Nights, the story was set in China. Disney and earlier Hollywood adaptations moved the locale to the Middle East.

I realize this was 30 years ago but seriously? Berry Bostwick, Susan Egan, Donna McKechnie and Brent Sudduth in ancient China? Who cast this?

According to IMDb, Rachelle Farberman.

Other intriguing theater / pop culture note: Micky Dolenz directed this.

I watched it out of sick curiosity . This cast is seriously OVERqualified for the show; the lyrics and music are so simple that it honestly feels like they’re talking down to the audience, even though it’s intended for children. Micky really should have told Barry to lighten his touch, he’s mugging a lot. The only good thing I can say about this (culturally insensitive) production is that they did stick pretty close to the original story.
Another day, another dollar is the reality of my mentality. Otherwise, don't even bother.- TLC

This seems to be based on the same version MTI still licenses. They call it the Prince Street Players Version to differentiate from the multiple Disney versions they license.
