...have received as much sight-unseen hatred as the upcoming WSS, and, in those cases, did the haters turn out to be right or wrong?

On BWW and ATC --- pretty much every show!

The biggest comparison to this is the revival of PORGY & BESS. Pat Healy in the NYT wrote a piece about the changes that Diane Paulus & team were making to the show, and it sparked a lot of backlash including a strongly-worded letter to the NYT from Sondheim. The end result was something far less egregious than had been initially portrayed. I suppose TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD's pre-opening lawsuit is somewhat similar.

Slave Play. People flipped out over the twerk photo then it spread further by the article published by The Root. There was even a Hange.org petition to "Shutdown Slave Play" lol

 

ETA: this was a response to the off Broadway run though so not exactly the same.

The new musical Diana doesn't get any good rap anywhere online. Even the box office attendant rolled her eyes when I was trying to ask some questions about the future show.

I seem to remember Come From Away getting a fair bit of “hate” before it opened.

I remember a lot of ppl hating My Fair Lady sight unseen bc their “favorite” hadn’t gotten chosen as Eliza ...

I agree re the Michael Jackson musical.  I find it so hard to believe that someone is producing such a show right now.  Boy, will I be surprised when it is a monster hit.
