Hello everyone,
I have an empty spot on Tuesday evening for my December 10-15 trip. Initially I wanted to leave the day open and try for Hamilton last minute tickets, since I would love to see it again after London. But I've been checking daily on both TM and StubHub and it looks like the lower price for decent seats is around the $250 - $300 mark with fees and this is too much, for a show I have already seen. Plus, I will be staying in DC before and after my New York trip and the Tour makes stops in both Richmond and Norfolk that time, so If I feel like it would be much easier to catch it there.
So, narrowing it down I am between Tina and Beetlejuice. I know that both don't have the best reviews from people who have seen them, besides the amazing Adrianne Warren and the energetic Alex Brightman but since I am also seeing Hadestown, Dear Evan Hansen, Moulin Rouge, Little Shop, Come from Away and Frozen on this trip, I don't have a lot of choices. I love Tina's music but it looks mostly like a concert-type jukebox show and nothing innovative that I haven't seen before but is Adrianne so worth it ? And even though I was not a big fan of the Beetlejuice movie, the videos I have seen look fun and spectacular and I'm a sucker for spectacle, so it piqued my interest. Price-wise, it looks like Tina is not crazily prized and Beetlejuice has some amazing discount seats for around $120, which is great !
What do you guys think ? Thank you

Since it doesn't sound like you really WANT to see either, why go at all? Why not venture OFF Broadway? Some great stuff happening there. For example, the current production of Fiddler is the best I have ever seen. (not sure if they play Tuesday nights, but I'm guessing they do!) Even springing for a fancy dinner or some time at a museum or jazz club or improv club?
While I've had a few times I've enjoyed a show I was skeptical of, most of the time it turns out to be what I expect. As much as I love theater, I HATE walking out feeling disappointed.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Hello dramamama,
I understand perfectly what you are saying but nothing makes me happier than seeing a Broadway show when in New York, so even if I am not that enthusiastic about a show, it is still my preferred choice of a thing to do. Something about being in a Broadway Theater, no matter what I am seeing, fills my heart with joy and excitement ! This is my 5th time visiting the city, so I have done different staff and it's been 4 years since my last trip, so thankfully there are lots of shows to see in 5 days. I will be travelling alone, so I prefer seeing a show, since most of the other options, like dinner, a jazz club, etc. are much better enjoyed with company.
Also, I live in Athens, Greece, which does have a LOT of Theater of Off-Broadway style as well as various clubs but no big shows with the amazing production values that Broadway has, so I always tend to stick mostly to Broadway when I visit, since this is the thing that I can never get back home. But I will get my sort-of off-Broadway flavor with Little Shop of Horrors 
I recognize the importance of Fiddler but I was never a fan of it.

Not going to do it, but I’ve seen it three times and was disappointed the third time that nothing spooky happened. But anyway, that’s my recommendation.

Posted: 11/7/19 at 7:55amThrowing my vote in for Tina. Saw it last night and Adrienne’s powerhouse performance electrifies. When “Tina” finds her voice and independence, the pacing really picks up. Can’t remember the last time a performer got a standing ovation after a song early in the show....and boy can she dance! She is out of this world & I’m glad to have seen her in this role. They need to just hand the Tony over to her. Will make for a nice balance to your week.

I haven’t seen Beetlejuice but saw Tina with Adrienne in London and it really is fantastic. One of the better bio-jukebox musicals for sure.
That said, flip a coin, if you’re disappointed by the result, you know which one to go for.

Having seen both, I'd go with Beetlejuice. Much better show and stage sets are amazing. Adrienne Warren is amazing, but the musical itself is bad. A tough choice.

I didn't love Beetlejuice--the story had problems and most of the songs are mediocre--but I would still easily recommend it over Tina. If you want the big Broadway spectacle and production values, that's it. It's fun (if forgettable), the cast is very talented and giving their all, the sets and stagecraft are terrific and worth seeing. Unlike Tina, which has Warren and really nothing else.

I've seen both. Didn't really like either, but Beetlejuice is the better show. If you're looking for that big Broadway spectacle then it's the one for you. Moulin Rouge and Beetlejuice are the leaders in terms of pure spectacle right now.
Alternatively, have you considered Waitress? Great show and about to close. They just announced Katharine McPhee will be returning to the lead role for that month and she is fantastic!

DCDrama2, you changed things !!! I was getting ready to get a Beetlejuice ticket, since it sounds like I will enjoy it more (thank you ALL for your input) and there are great seats at great discounted prices and then I learn this !!! I LOVE Katharine McPhee and Waitress has a lot of great seats left for my date ! If there was a small chance they could get Jeremy Jordan again (who is my absolute favorite performer) for the last month, I would be in sheer Heaven ! There is not, is there ???
The thing is that, from the start, I could never get too interested in Waitress, its subject matter is just not that appealing to me. I admit I don't know much about it but from everything I have glimpsed, it looks way too small, sweet and mellow for my taste but of course, I could be wrong. But the draw of seeing Katharine McPhee is indeed big to ignore, so now I am at a cross point between this and Beetlejuice...I am still leaning towards Beetlejuice but.. decisions, decisions...

Small, sweet, and mellow it is. It's also very funny and Sara Bareilles' songs are delightfully intoxicating. It's certainly a character driven show and has no razzle dazzle like some other shows. But it's got a lot going for it and McPhee really fits the role. I saw her last summer in NY and was floored. I'm going back JUST for her again in December.
No JJ, they announced that role already and it's the original Dr. P, Drew Gehling returning to close it out.

Well, Beetlejuice it is and it filled my last remaining spot. A 4th row left orchestra aisle seat at a great discounted price, made my decision easier. I am so happy and excited ! 7 shows (Beetlejuice, Hadestown, Dear Evan Hansen, Moulin Rouge, Little Shop of Horrors, Come from Away and Frozen) plus the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which I've never seen, in 5 days ! December can't come soon enough. Thank you all for your input and opinions. Broadway here I come !!!

Thank you ! It's funny, it wasn't even on my radar, because back when it opened, I remember reading a lot of negativity here about it and since I was never a big fan of the movie, I gave up on it. But lately, when I decided to add another show to my list and looked better into it, it looks like spectacular, mindless FUN, which sounds like the best way to start my December Broadway week !

I have not seen Tina , But I have seen Beetlejuice and totally recommend it. The sets are great as are the costumes. I hope to see it again on my next trip to NYC. Also you can easily get a rush ticket for Beetlejuice.
I turned up at the box office an hour after it opened and was able to get a $43 rush ticket in the 2nd row on the aisle.

Beetlejuice is SUCH a good time. It's silly fun anchored by two really incredible performers: Alex Brightman and Leslie Kritzer, who steals every damn scene she's in. I caught it on a depressing day in october and it was exactly what the doctor ordered.
