SOUTH FLORIDA TEENS MAKE THEATRE ACCESSIBLE

Inside Out Theatre Company is soon to perform its production of “Spring Awakening” on December 8th at 2:00pm and 6:30pm in the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Sunrise.  The musical is a favorite among teens and Inside Out Theatre is now making it accessible to even more young people by translating the performance into American Sign Language (ASL).

The musical, written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, explores topics of communication between children and parents of sexuality and what happens when those around us fail to listen. “Spring Awakening” was first written as a play in 1891 and its content, which includes depression, teen suicide, academic pressure, child abuse, sexuality and adolescent discovery still resonates with teens today. The author, Frank Wedekind, believed that ignorance leads to tragedy and we hope to avoid that by providing a powerful tool for communication and awareness.” says Robin Braun, director of the production and founder of the company.

This production contains a unique feature: American Sign Language. The students have decided to translate their second performance at 6:30 into ASL, not only making the show accessible to members of the deaf community, but also incorporating a new angle on the themes of the show.

“I want to get more involved in the Deaf community and am fortunate enough to be able to have opportunities such as this and sign a whole show. I think it’s important to open the arts to as many people as possible. There are not many opportunities for Deaf people to sit and enjoy a piece of theatre due to the lack of interpreters available,” says Hannah Miller, one of the students translating the show.

The students in the cast come from all parts of Broward County; with some of the best performers of every school coming together to make art and a positive change. They encourage as many as possible to come out and see what it means to be innocent again. The incorporation of ASL is something that the entire cast believes matters. The students promote theatre for all, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the performing arts.
