Dave Malloy's Moby Dick at A.R.T.

Many performances for the December/January run are already sold out or have limited availability.  Mr. Malloy promises that the Rachel Chavkin directed production will be "massive."   I'm intrigued that  some "Pequod wet deck seating could experience possible ocean mist."   This run will easily completely sell out early on so those who want to travel to Cambridge to see this shouldn't procrastinate with purchasing tickets.

Did I read somewhere that it's going to the Public after Boston? I just saw a terrific production of PRELUDES in London and am so excited about this new work.

I'm seeing the third or fourth preview (I'm not sure, but the date is December 6th) and i'm SO excited. Pro-tip for people who are students (and/or people who still have access to a .edu email and a Student ID) - Get an A.R.T. Student Membership. Even if this is the only show you'll see there, it's worth it. The membership is 10 dollars and the tix are ALL 15 dollars, for ANY SEAT at ANY PERFORMANCE of ANY SHOW. Needless to say, I'll probably see it more than once because of this. I was able to snag Six and Moby-Dick tickets for $40 total thanks to the deal (Membership fee included - technically the tickets were only $30 total). I swear this isn't a paid promotion or anything lol, I'm just surprised at the amount of people who don't know about this!

Anyway, on to the topic of the show itself - I'm so excited. I'll be sitting in the "StarBoard" section of The Pequod, and judging by the A.R.T. map, they've rearranged the theatre to be in-the-round. Doesn't surprise me, as I don't think that Dave Malloy has done one singular show that has 100% traditional seating or staging. 
I've also been following the cast/cast on Instagram, and judging from rehearsal snippets, this is going to be a four-hour-long magnum opus. Perhaps even more epic than COMET. I'm most excited to see Manik Choksi as Ishmael, and "StarrBucksby", or Starr Busby as Starbuck ♥︎♥︎. I'm not sure if this will be able to transfer due to the weirdness factors (then again, we said the same thing about COMET), so I'd definitely advise everyone to hop on the A.R.T. deals, assuming it's not sold out already!

Is it certain that it will wind up at Public? I couldn't find any info online. After The Great Comet and Hadestown I'm Rachel Chavkin's genius biggest fan and don't want to miss any of her new productions. I'm wondering if NY run will happen.

Very excited for this show, although I won’t be seeing it until January. I haven’t heard anything about a NY run but with the talent involved, it’d be shocking for it to not run in NY after Boston.

ART has a space in NYC, yes? And Rachel has connections with NY Workshop which is easy to reconfigure.

@SouthernCakes and Dramamamma- there is an off-Broadway space in NY called “A.R.T” on like 53rd or something at 10th Ave. upstairs from MCC’s new space. But it’s unaffiliated with American Rep. It stands for “Alliance of Resident Theatres”

I have tickets to see this in Boston during the last weekend of the run, so I won’t be of much help to those looking for early reports. But I’m very excited! Bought the lowest-priced tier, but haven’t been assigned seats yet. I assume they’ll give me partial view since it was so cheap! Hopefully I’ll get slightly better than “obstructed” since I bought them the minute they went onsale (the email said we would be assigned seats in order of purchase)

I'll be coming from Chicago to see this! Shelled out for Zone A but looks like there's some dynamic pricing going on because tickets are definitely pricier now than when I purchased on Oct 3rd.

Thank goodness you posted this.  I went to check and see what seats were available for the show I purchased tickets for when they first went on sale (Dec 27th at 2 pm) and saw that that show was no longer listed for some reason.  I called the box office and it turns out they canceled that show.  The woman I spoke to said it happened like an hour prior (she wasn't sure why).  They happily exchanged my tickets for the day earlier and when she asked where I wanted to sit I said I would love the "wet deck".  She said, "that's great, our subscribers really don't want to sit there" and gave me the "best seats in the wet deck" which according to her was B 18 & 19.  So if anyone is looking for a good seat that is what that box office is saying!

I'm in B11 and 12 for 12/6....Very excited.

 

I'm a ticket subscriber, and originally tix were listed as general admission, but they'd asked if we were interested in either interactive or participation seats (they didn't know which, if either would happen). My son and I were up for anything.  About two weeks ago, I got an email showing tix had been exchanged for assigned seats....but no info about the seating chart, so nice to now have the complete info.

The dynamic pricing might well be, but I also note that they also released more $25.00 seats once they finalized the seating plan. I ordered seats the day after they went on sale to general public (Oct. 4) before seating was assigned and believe I got the last two $25.00 seats. Happy to see that others have renewed access to this great price.  JBroadway believed the lowest price tier seats will likely land an obstructed or partial view but according to the current seating plan, this is not necessarily the case (if by lowest tier JBroadway meant @ $25.00). It seems that higher priced tickets ($50.00 and $70.00) are listed as obstructed or partial but the $25.00 tickets are not (though we might be getting wet).  Works for me.

Thanks for pointing this out! I did, in fact, mean the $25 tier. I went to the website to take a look, and from the handful of dates that still have $25 tix left, it looks like they will be in the front row on the side sections. I will be very happy if that's where I end up! But since there are so few $25 seats available, it's difficult to tell if maybe they were also scattered throughout the house -  some of them might also be in the partial view section, and they just aren't showing up because they've already been purchased. My mentality here is: hope for the best, expect the worst. Especially with such a low-priced ticket. But now I have somewhat more hope of a better seat!

No, this is a thrust stage configuration,  at least  from what I'm seeing- seats only on 3 sides. The Pequod (for those that do t have access to the seating chart) comes from the traditional stage over(?) the center section of the front seating area. I know the seats in that section are all easily removable.

Having a look, there seem to be few tickets still available, and for such a short run with no reviews yet. Does anyone know if it's likely to extend? I didn't know if the A.R.T. did that often.

The final Moby Dick performance is January 12 and another production opens at The Loeb Drama Center on January 24 so considering load-out, rehearsal time, etc. it wouldn't be possible for it to extend.

Tne ART normally schedules a very tight season. The only show that can usually extend is their spring production....this year being 1776.

As for the NY speculation. I talked to Dave at the Guggenheim preview for Octet and he said it was coming to NY after it’s initial run.

It received a reading at The Public a few months ago. Perhaps that's where it'll end up.
