David Byrnes show American Utopia is burning down the house!
At Saturdays performance, an attendee told us, We smelled weed in the theater twice.
Unlike other Broadway shows, audiences are encouraged to get up and dance, while limited cell phone use is allowed, and there was a standing ovation after every single song.
The show, seen by Elvis Costello and Florence Welch, has extended its run till Feb. 16.

If you can distinctly smell it twice, then there isn't enough being smoked...

I’m glad this show is doing well! I love it’s weird off-beat nature and glad Timbers is finally seeing success with 3 broadway shows running! I love him as a director.

I mean I have no issues taking a few hits of my pax before I head inside the theatre, but no way would I do it inside! Even during a concert lol. Maybe the Hudson just feels too fancy to me but I wouldn't do it inside. Not an arena show here guys

It's a concert by an esteemed new-wave musician. What did they expect?

Maybe my Sunday matinee audience was more sedate, but there was no weed smoking or standing ovations after every song. Byrne told us we could stand up and dance as long as we keep the aisles clear. So that’s what we did.

I'm guessing that the report is greatly exaggerated, perhaps the smell wafted off others, but I doubt people were lighting up inside - where ANY kind of smoking is prohibited inside NY buildings.

I'm very curious about this show.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Smoking weed at a BW performance?  Cool!  Can I come next week and take off my clothes at intermission?  It's so "Woodstock" (and so stupid, too).

Give me a break.

I really want to see this but don't want to have to stand to see the show because of people in front of me being up out of their seats.

Just give the world Love.

Byrne makes the announcement about dancing towards the end. At least at mt performance, everyone was seated until then.
