Im sure this has been covered many times on this board somewhere, but I did a search and couldnt find anything useful .... is there a particular most likely scenario for actors taking vacations relative to the date of the Tony Awards? Im trying to plan a trip for early June, 2020. The Tony Awards are Sunday night June 7, 2020. Would actors be likely to be on vacation the week before or after the Tony Awards?

Specifically, would actors be likely to appear the Friday/Saturday right before the Tony Awards? And in particular, would an actor nominated for a major award be performing Friday or Saturday night the day before the awards? And potentially on vacation the week after?

I dont want to miss a couple actors Im really looking forward to seeing, so I am trying to decide if the weekend of the Tony Awards or the weekend after would be a safer bet?

Thank you very much! I know this is far away ... but I am a neurotic planner!

You have the better chance before.

Tony voters watch the Tony nominated shows during the month of May and first week of June. Probably best to come to NYC during that time if watching the nominated actors mean a lot to you.

I'd say most actors do perform the Friday/Saturday before Tony Awards. The only actor in recent years I recall not performing during those days before Tony Award Sunday was Ben Platt (for vocal rest.)

When I saw Hadestown the day before the Tonys, the whole OBC was there, but I heard Eva was out during the night show. A lot of times, it has to do with who is in the Tony performance - I heard Josh Groban and Lucas Steele took the day off at Great Comet before the Tonys.

Thank you for the responses. I’m most interested in seeing Laurie Metcalf, so I will assume she will most likely be performing on the days leading up to the awards.

Sorry for the intrusion, but a somewhat related question.

Does anyone know the date for the 2021 Tony Awards?  It seems that most, but not all, of the dates during the past 10 years or so have been the second Sunday in June.  The only reference I can find for 2021 is "projected" to be June 6th, which is the first Sunday.

Once more seats become available for "Music Man," I may try to buy a ticket so that I am in NYC for the Tony Awards weekend.

Thanks.

For what it’s worth, prior to this year, I’ve come to NYC the week/weekend following the Tonys for the last 3 years, always to see several shows. I never had any major absences, and for the shows that won Tonys it was actually an even more special experience (for example, The Band’s Visit band and David Yazbek gave an unforgettable mini concert at the stage door after the first show following the Tonys).

For what it's worth, I've been attending the theater since I was a teen in the 70s.  I frequently see a lot of shows around Memorial Day and the days leading up to the Tonys including Tony Sunday.  I have found that it's more likely for actors to be out of shows over Memorial Day weekend, but I've never had an issue with cast members being out of the show on those days leading up to or on the day of the Tonys.  The only actor I can even recall being out the Saturday before the Tonys was Laura Benanti in the revival of Into the Woods, but I don't remember if she had her accident before or after the telecast (she did perform on the  Tonys).  I think you'd be fine if you catch a play on the day of the Tonys rather than a musical as  some people mentioned here, actors may take the day off for vocal rest or if they are performing on the Tonys telecast.  Awards season can be tough on actors and they are active promoting themselves and their shows during that time, so I think it's more likely you'll find people out of the show after than before the Tonys.

My experience is based on one year, but I saw Hello Dolly and Comet in the same day the Saturday before the Tonys, and it seemed like everyone who was singing on the broadcast the next day called out. DPH for Dolly; Groban, Steele, and others from Comet. It's put me off of ever going on that weekend again, at least for shows where I really want to see the OBC.
