Slave Play Preview Thread |
was there tonight, the energy felt like an opening night. Having seen it at the workshop and still knowing the twists my heart was pounding throughout, a credit to Robert O'Hare brilliant directing and the cast has only gotten better since the off-broadway run, I cant stress this enough, go see this show. my only ONLY note is there is one scene transition toward the middle that I WISH could be shorter but obviously I see why it is there and as long as it is, but apart from that the 2hr 15min flys by.
two other points, if you want a steal, get seat H 102 in the mezz, cheap and lots of legroom
also they weirdly DO have merch for ths show, right now a logo magnet and a very interesting Windowcard, seeing a older white women holding it up was certainly a image, apparently they also have a tote bag and a shirt coming as well

Hot take. I think you can do both.

I think it's worth engaging with all kinds of material but plays have an intended audience. And that's rarely, if ever, successfully EVERYONE. Even a show written for a general audience isn't going to have universal appeal because it can't speak to the specific wants and needs of every prospective audience member. Plenty of "universal" shows are actually shows written for white audiences.
To use relatively bland examples, a younger audience member is simply not going to have as jaded of a response to tropes specifically because they have seen them so-oft repeated. And an older audience member is more likely to tap into nostalgia for references that a younger audience member is not connected to. There are obviously more loaded ways that identity, race, class, education, etc. can play into your response to art.
Personally, what I know about the play does make it seem like it engages in edge lord tactics and juvenile shock value but, if I can, I'd like to see it myself to form my own opinion. And regardless of how I feel about a specific play, I at least appreciate that Broadway is becoming slightly more accessible to diverse creatives and audience members.
can people not comment in this thread unless they have seen the dang show, their has been ONE broadway performance and this thread has already been derailed by nonsense half a dozen times.

THANK YOU!! When I saw that this thread had three pages already I was excited to read some reactions to it.. I should have known better though :/
This thread has degenerated into a retread of the Be More Chill thread. Some haughty types dismissing the play entirely because they heard that people younger than themselves liked it.

Are you unaware that this already had a celebrated run at New York Theatre Workshop, where audiences are generally not made up of invited younger people?

LightsOut90, I actually had already bought the same seat when I see the show on September 23. Great to hear about the legroom. How is the view?
Excited and curious to see this on the 28th.
Didn’t exactly rush last night, per say (I sprinted up to the ticket window at 8:05 and was the last person in the theatre). Since it was showtime, I was given an (I think) unsold seat in the orchestra. Far left row N, $40. View was fantastic, I cannot believe my luck they actually let me in.
If younger audiences are astounded by the play surely that is no bad thing? Hopefully it will encourage or consolidate a life-long interest in theatre.
As the years go by, hopefully these young people will develop a mature and wide-ranging appreciation of theatre at its most sophisticated, and will then be able to look back at Slave Play- and possibly form different opinions.
There are many novels I hated as a kid but now love- and vice versa!

I'm not sure anyone would disagree with that. It was the concept that young people attending indicated any other things about the show...

Golden BO staff has been fantastic for rush in my experience, courteous and generally willing to sell up to the last minute – usually for one of the side rear orch seats you mention. Glad that seems to be unchanged for this production.

I couldn’t imagine any bad seats for this production with how set was designed . I was in mezzanine.
Now on to the show, I went in with no knowledge of plot. It’s an interesting play . I’m not sure if I hated or liked it. May take me a few days to process. But I will say it dragged toward the end.
Cast was uniformly good with stand out James and Annie McNamara.
I was also expecting more controversial plot considering all the bitching in this thread .... but that’s besides the point
I think is better if you go into it with no knowledge of plot.
Theatre seemed full from where I was.
Will wait for Whizzer review , even though I haven’t seen a post from him in awhile

Thats because the people bitching have no clue what they are talking about because they haven't actually seen the thing.

Want to pay people's ticket and plane fare so they can write a better-informed comments? The play seems really dumb to me, but I'd be happy to read an analysis of it that changes. Care to provide your own, or a link to someone else's? I do think the play was published somewhere, but in a magazine, right? So it's not like I can get my hands on the text itself easily.
the script is available at the NYTW box office if you have a friend who lives here they can get you a copy and send it to you also American Theater Magazine is not that hard to order a copy of...

A copy of that issue is. "Can't get to the show because you live halfway across the country? Script available at the box office, have someone pick it up for you" isn't a very helpful suggestion.

Well, what else would you like them to say or do? They don't live where the play is. There aren't many options other than what they have posted to be able to see or read this play.

You’re better off seeing a therapist wherever you are to help you break the unhealthy obsession with this play.

Yup, but eventually water finds its own level.
