I'm really enjoying this! Based on the film and on comments here about the show, I wasn't hoping for deep emotional engagement, but rather some bangin' pop medleys, and boy does this album deliver there.
For those who've seen the show, is 'Sympathy for the Duke' a flashback? I thought I'd read a comment that Satine and the Duke are already together when Christian enters the scene in the stage version, but I may be wrong.
Regarding Aaron Tveit's performance, based just on this album, I suppose his sincere character might allow less room to cut loose than some of the other, more flamboyant parts? However, I would have liked a little more 'character voice' in his later songs, to help show his progression from idealistic to more embittered. In the later songs he still only uses that smooth, pleasant, almost 'boy band' sound that he does so well. (I don't mean to dismiss his voice in general; it just isn't the style I wanted for that part of this story.) Maybe he was directed to stick with pop stylings throughout specifically for the album though.

I don’t think the album does justice to Christian’s transition from innocent ingenue to heartbroken lover. In the show, it’s much more evident through the vocals and staging just how much the character had changed.

The more I listen to the album, the more I question the production choices. Had I not seen the show and know how powerful Karen’s and Aaron’s voices are I would give the OBCR an A+.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was expecting an album that was fun and high energy and that’s what I got.

I personally think that both Karen and Aaron sounded wonderful. I agree that “Roxanne” was a tad over produced for my tastes - some others have mentioned that there are some audio recordings of Aaron singing it live that sound much better, and I definitely agree. I still like the song, but I thought that “Crazy Rolling” came across better.

“Elephant Love Medley” is tons of fun and “Come What May” is gorgeous but “Nature Boy” is the real highlight for me. Perhaps I’m biased because I’ve always loved the song so much, but Sahr’s voice fits it perfectly and him and Aaron singing together at the end sounds beautiful.

Overall, I’ve really enjoyed this album and have had it on repeat since it came out. I’ve been anxiously awaiting a cast recording since the Boston run and for me, it doesn’t disappoint.

Nope, it plays out more or less like the movie- Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke and that’s how he ends up in her room.

For those who´ve seen the show...and remember...are there many songs left out of the recording? It´s hard to tell from the Playbill since there´s no song list...

Aside from abridged dance music, I think this recording is pretty complete.

There’s a few moments that are left out. Aaron sings a line or two from The Sound Of Music, Every Breath You Take, and Never Gonna Give You Up. There’s a small reprise of Diamonds Are Forever before Elephant Love Medley. “We should be lovers! We can’t do that,” is in Elephant Love Medley. That’s about it, IIRC.
