Which Mack & Mabel cast recording is the best one to own? Generally I'd go with the original Broadway cast recording but the London and concert cast recordings seem to have more songs included and I believe the London cast recording is a better reference recording for the current licensed version of the show. Which one is the most enjoyable to you?
No recording can compete with Bernadette’s legendary performance. They don’t make them how they used it.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I'd go with the original recording. The production values may leave something to be desired but the performances of Robert Preston and Bernadette Peters are superb. No one has ever sung "Time Heals Everything" as effectively as Peters. Unforgettable.
There’s a warmth to Preston’s performance that I’ve always loved. His last spoken line at the end of “I Promise You A Happy Ending” gives me chills. When I want a better feel for the show itself though I prefer the London recording with McGillan.
