The play centers on a couple, Bri and Sheila, who are struggling to save their marriage while trying to save the life of their only child, Josephine, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

The play-- a revival of the 1967 British play "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg"-- opened at the Longacre Theater on March 27 1985.  It ran a total of 101 performances (including 8 previews).

It was the winner of two Tony awards (Stockard Channing best actress and best revival), two Outer Critics Circle awards (Jim Dale best actor and best revival), Drama Desk award  (outstanding revival) and IT Clarence Derwent award (Joanna Gleason most promising female performer).
