Hi all! I read the news as you all have, that Six will open on Broadway early next year. I couldn't be more thrilled! I'm really looking forward to seeing it. I was just wondering from a business standpoint, if it would be competing for the same audience as Moulin Rouge!. Do you think the hype from Moulin Rouge! will die down by the time Six opens?
I don’t know if they’d be competing with each other directly; MR has a built in fan base from the movie, where Six doesn’t have that. I know the hype is strong for this one but no one knows what is going to happen when it opens at a much larger theatre for an open ended run. I think MR is going to be just fine for at least the next year or so, other shows non withstanding.
So far Six is the only musical of the season with an original score. Assuming that continues, I’m guessing it’ll compete with any eligible play in the best score category at the Tony Awards and probably win. I would think the fact that it has original score will give it the edge for the top prize as well assuming it receives a consensus of strong positive reaction from the theatrical community and the other jukebox musicals that haven’t opened yet don’t. It’s way too early to predict of course, but I do think Moulin Rouge! still has a shot, especially if Six is considered too slight due to its short running time and reported concert-like atmosphere.
I say all this only to make point that if Six can win best musical next June, it’ll have all the momentum it needs to have some staying power.
And EVERYONE is going after the same money. That being said, I think SIX is aging a bit younger than MR. MR has the sentimental feel - so more about people that were into the film. I know my students are far more into curious about Six.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Same audience, perhaps. But I would not call them direct competition really simply based on ticket prices and making it accessible to audiences. If anything, Moulin Rouge's uncalled for high ticket prices might only HELP Six. People that can't afford to pay $200 to sit in the balcony of Moulin Rouge might be more willing to pay $140 for legit good seats to see Six. BUT Moulin Rouge comes with a built in fanbase unlike Six's fanbase because Moulin Rouge is a piece of Pop Culture. People that don't see musicals will go see Moulin Rouge because they know/like the movie. Six has a very dedicated fanbase but it's in no way a piece of pop culture. Yet at least.
If we are talking about award season potential, it's way to early to tell as there are still a LOT of room for other shows to announce and open before the Tony cut off. As of now, I would say don't count out Girl From North County as real competition.

Girl From the North Country is my sleeper fave to win Best Musical unless the voters weigh the tech awards MR is likely to win heavily in their vote for the top prize--but Six would definitely have a shot at original score given that it's currently the only original score out there against plays as you noted.
