Apparently, the blackout is due to a 'transformer fire' in Times Square. This is such disappointing news for ticket holders -  glad I was there last weekend. Wonder how many restaurants and  hotels are affected, too?

Major power outages in Manhattan due to transformer fire. Nearly 43,000 customers without power in Hell’s Kitchen and Upper West Side. Including multiple subway stations, Rockefeller Center, and as we know, most Broadway shows tonight are delayed or cancelled.

Chad Kimball is on the phone with NY1 now talking about getting a text about the blackout from his stage manager just as he was getting off the subway, and they had to wait for the Broadway League's word on what to do. Also talking about the spirit of the city lending a helping hand directing traffic, connecting it to the spirit of his show, Come From Away!

Fiddler is also going on tonight Off-Broadway. So you can also get tickets to a show that's actually good! Times Square Partial Power Outage (see, you're not the only one who can be edgy)

Just spent the last two hours walking all around the theater district. We passed almost every show and the lines were around the block for the patrons waiting to get back in to their shows. I saw Timothy Hughes, Andre De Shields and a few other Hadestown cast members entertaining the crowd and some of the boys from Book of Mormon sang happy birthday to a girl in front of their marquee. I feel so bad for the people that had tickets for tonight. I would be devastated :'(

Devastated? Really?

Disappointed, definitely. But devastated? If missing a Broadway show (even including any and all transportation, meals and lodging costs) is "devastating" how would you possibly cope with a real crisis?  You know, losing your home, losing a family member to a cruel disease, or maybe a crime...

Honestly, the level of hyperbole here is ridiculous. There is no show EVER that is worth that level of anguish.

Dude, chill. I live in nyc but when I lived across the country and came here once every five years, if I had flown all the way to New York to see a broadway musical I was really excited about for several thousand dollars (airfare & show tix for a family of 3) and it was cancelled, yes, I would be devastated. If that person had said devastated in perpetuity or for the next many many years, I’d say that’s an unhealthy reaction. But devastated in that moment? For the night? Maybe a day or two? I think that’s allowed. No one has said they would mourn the loss of an evening of theater the way they would a house or family member. You’re the one escalating and taking things to the extreme by jumping to accusations of hyperbole and talking about crisis when someone was just expressing empathy for those missing out tonight.

Channel 2 was just talking to a girl who was going to make her Broadway debut tonight as Alana in DEH.  She had a small crowd who had come to see her specifically, and I felt bad for her and them - but then she improvised a parody of Ti Moune's part in "Mama Will Provide" about the blackout, and I didn't feel quite as bad anymore.  She sounded really good, and she seemed accepting of it - she said, "I now get to make TWO Broadway debuts.  How cool is that?!"

"It's you." "It's me. Orpheus." "Eurydice..." *crying*

What are the rules concerning performers' pay, in the event of a blackout?

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I had tickets for oklahoma! tonight. I don’t live in nyc so I’m a little bummed but what can you do? I was at dinner with a friend and thankfully got to pay before it went out completely. I’m happy I wasn't stuck on an elevator or a subway which I’ve heard are insane. I did get to see Frozen this afternoon which I thought was magical! It’s been an interesting day- won’t forget it anytime soon.

Wow! I was about to say all of them started with the letter B except for Dave Chappelle. lmao. Also, I think most of those theaters are east of Broadway (except the Lunt, where Dave Chappelle is.)

I am concerned about the baby boom in NYC in approximately 9 months.

Not to be confused with Dave19.

How could a few theaters still perform?  Especially the Lunt-Fontanne, which is between 7th and 8th Ave, if all the other theaters between 7th & 8th were shut down.

Did these theaters have backup generators, or did the blackout just skip over the Lunt-Fontanne but hit every other building between 7th and 8th Ave?

I'm leaving New York tomorrow after a trip that we started planning a year ago with the main purpose of seeing Harry Potter. A few other shows got added along the way, including Hadestown and The Prom. Maybe devastated was too strong a word, but If I had tickets tonight to Part Two or either of those shows that I have been looking forward to seeing forever and they got cancelled then I would have been extremely disappointed. This trip was very expensive and I don't know when I'll be able to come back. I should have known I would get a response like that on here.
