I wonder what it was like for her to play this very difficult role at such a young age. Sometimes the recording is hard to listen to because she sounds so young, and we associate her with the very childish character of Violet. I always wanted to ask her about her role here but I guess that isnt going to happen.
With how much people love Denises biggest (in every sense) movie, youd think wed have gotten a better broadway version but I guess not...

It’s funny that two of my newfound flop loves this year - Lolita and Smile - both had some connection to her (she was in the film Smile was based on). Was sad to hear this news. One of the liveliest presences in the Wonka film, for sure - in a movie full of smart casting, she always stood out to me.
As tragic as Ms. Nickerson’s passing is, the real tragedy is what her son and daughter-in-law have gone through since Ms. Nickerson’s stroke a year ago. Her son has had to work two jobs just to make ends meet. Her daughter-in-law had to quit her job to take care of Ms. Nickerson at home full time. Now, after her passing, the two have had to create a Go Fund Me page to carry out Ms. Nickerson’s wishes of being cremated as well as the costly hospital bills. This is how “great” our country is. I loved Ms. Nickerson for years on Dark Shadows, and films like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the TV film The Neon Ceiling with Ms, Lee Grant. Ms. Nickerson also appeared in a musical version of Lolita called Lolita, My Love with Dorothy Loudon. It closed in Boston in 1971.
I’ve heard from multiple people that Denise never discussed LOLITA MY LOVE publicly or otherwise. Still, i wish while she were still with us she would’ve given us something. I spent many many years listening to that album in high school and college. Very saddened to learn of her passing. Violet was always my favorite Wonka character too. I hope her son and daughter in law are able to recover soon. I would agree Ethel Mae that is an even bigger tragedy.
Wow, Ethel, I did not know that. That is indeed a tragic situation but I thank you for telling me and everyone else here. It is always difficult when an older family member needs full time care, I know that from personal experience. I’m going to make my donation now.
