Saw "Doctor Sleep" last week and I loved it.  As a Stephen King fan, I was nervous how it was going to combine both the Kubrick universe and the King universe, but Mike Flanagan pulled if off beautifully (minus the last 3rd which kinda faltered a bit).  

Also saw "Terminator: Dark Fate" and they succeeded to piss me off in the first 5 minutes and it was just a rehash of previous entries in the series.  Talk about a disappointment!

Saw Parasite twice and I highly recommend it. 

Hoping to see Lighthouse tomorrow.

Lighthouse was nuts - I’m still processing it nearly 48 hours later. I loved it, don’t get me wrong - but there’s a lot to think about there. Both men give incredible performances and the cinematography is beautiful. I don’t think I’ll see it again - once was enough - though I’m glad I experienced it. I’d certainly recommend it. Drop all expectations of what you think it’s going to be, because you’re probably wrong.

Still holding out for Parasite to show up in my market. The nearest place (and only place within about an hour) showing it is about 30 minutes away and isn’t AMC (I’m an A-List member and prefer not to have to shell out more money for movies when I’m already paying for them). If it were AMC, I’d probably drive out.

Omg hi fellow A-Lister! Check this weekend for Parasite, it’s going more wide. How scary is The Lighthouse though? As in, things popping out at you? I hate feeling like I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for something to just randomly show up when watching a horror film. If it’s all about ambiance and more of a spooky creepy ride, then I’m so in. Of course, only answer without going into spoilers if possible. I’m seeing it either way lol

I didn’t feel that it was very scary at all. It’s certainly tense and suspenseful at times, but not frightening. No jump scares or the like that I recall.

That’s good to hear, can’t wait to catch it! 
 

seeing Jojo Rabbit tomorrow as well. As a massive Taika fan I just cannot wait!!

Doctor Sleep was magnificent, what a cracking yarn that was. Scary in places , truly well done. Loved loved loved it.

I loved it too, Rosscoe.  I was debating whether to see it again last night after I saw the advanced screening last week but I accidentally took a nap after work and missed it.  So good!

Got my ticket to Parasite on Sunday night and Jojo Rabbit on Monday night. I'm looking forward to both. I'll also be seeing Doctor Sleep at some point in the coming week - as a huge King fan (I actually consider The Shining to be my favorite movie of all time, and I'm working my way through his canon of novels and short stories/novellas), I can hardly contain my excitement.

On Saturday I saw "Doctor Sleep" for a second time (and loved it even more).  Then afterwards, I saw "JoJo Rabbit" which took me about 15 minutes are so to get into the rhythm of the film, but once I did, I loved it.  It was a great 2 Movie Day.

Saw The Irishman on Broadway. Very long and kind of confusing. I've never been a huge Scorsese fan, so I don't think this was for me. It didn't feel like a movie. It felt like I was binging a miniseries complete with bad Netflix cinematography. The CGI was really bad. Really underwhelming. Pacino is great. 7/10

Also saw Marriage Story. It was great. Baumbach's screenplay is gorgeous. Randy Newman's score doesn't always work and occasionally hurts the film. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are incredible and Oscar-worthy, as is Laura Dern in a small but scene stealing role. It's beautiful and funny and had the entire theater sobbing. 9.5/10

Parasite is a downright masterpiece. One of the best films that I've ever seen. It somehow is able to hit every single genre and is never boring. It's hilarious and heart-racing. Brilliant performances, brilliant writing, and directing. 10/10

Saw Hustlers. Good movie. Great directorial choices and a truly fun, but not frivolous movie. It's good. Way better than it needed to be. J-Lo is competent. She's fine. I have no idea why she has any Oscar buzz. 7/10

Pain and Glory is really good. It's really emotionally rich, but I had a bad theatrical experience in that godawful 42nd street AMC. It's beautifully personal and the performances, especially from Antonio Banderas, are gorgeous. Poetic cinema. I can't wait to rewatch this where I can really take it in. 8/10

I returned to JoJo Rabbit and really loved it again. It has no business being so good. It's surprisingly nuanced on a second watch. The themes are shockingly rich and it feels like a film that will age really well and develop a cult following. After seeing all the Best Picture contenders, except for Little Women and 1917, I still think this is the winner. My theater was loudly enthusiastic about it and it does have political relevance. I've wanted to see a broad comedy win Best Picture for quite some time, and I think this'll be it. It isn't a frivolous comedy. 10/10

JoJo Rabbit and Parasite are tied as my favorites of this year. Closely followed by Marriage Story and The Farewell.

I caught Parasite last night, and wow, that was brilliant. There was not one second that I was not captivated and enthralled by. Incredible performances, spot-on direction, beautifully shot - don't miss this one.

I moved some things around and saw Doctor Sleep tonight instead of Jojo Rabbit. I think that I liked it for the most part, but I feel like it lacked a lot of what made The Shining so phenomenal. The new characters - Rose the Hat and comrades - didn't do a lot for me, despite the performances being mostly fine. I found myself longing for that tension and uneasiness that builds all the way through The Shining. Ewan is serviceable but nothing to write home about. The callbacks to the original were fun, and definitely needed to be there, but they felt forced and out of place. I spent the first hour and forty-five minutes wondering when they would finally and inevitably make it to the Overlook, and when they did, it was all crammed into a third act that was rushed and lost. It didn't spook me at all, which I was hoping for a great deal. Every time I felt as though something was starting to work, something else would come up and cause it to fall flat - such as the scene where Dan is at the Overlook bar being served by Jack. It started off strong, but lost me when Dan smacked the drink off the bar screaming something to the effect of "I won't do it!". How predictable and unexciting, and not one of Ewan's stronger acting moments in the film. For a follow-up to my favorite movie of all time, I was hoping for more.

Looking forward to Jojo Rabbit later in the week. Will report back.

Saw Jojo Rabbit this afternoon. I adored it. It’s over the top funny in an “I-shouldn’t-be-laughing-at-this” kind of way, but the humor is balanced well with some not-so-funny events - I got teary eyed at one part. I won’t post spoilers, but those who have seen the film will know which moment I’m referring to. It’s a really delightful film and I absolutely recommend it.

Parasite ~ Outstanding 

JoJo Rabbit ~ Now that was funny, heartbreaking and purely something extraordinary 

The Good Liar ~ I enjoyed it, took longer than should have for the payoff. Never saw the major twist coming.

I don’t understand the praise The Lighthouse received at all. Slow, tedious and not that interesting. I enjoyed The Witch and have no problems with a different approach to horror, but this was just a huge miss for me.

I've seen a ton of films lately. 

Parasite is definitely near the top of what I've seen. I gasped during a few of the twists in that film. I want to see it again. 

Lighthouse was fun, though no one seems to be talking about how R-Patts has about 10 different accents in the film. Loved Dafoe. 

I absolutely loved The Good Liar. Great fun with Mirren and Mckellen having such a good time. Also always good to see Russell Tovey!

Ford Vs. Ferrari was fun though I think a bit too long by 30 minutes or so. Still the races are thrilling and the sound design of the roaring engines got my adrenaline pumping!

I saw Last Christmas last night mainly due to my love of Christmas and London and while not a great film, Emilia Clarke is charming as is Michelle Yeoh. Henry Golding's character seems like a serial killer when he leads her down not one but two back alleys!

My list now is Honey Boy, Waves, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. I'll probably get to one of these this weekend but the rest will have to wait till after Thanksgiving. The family movie everyone has chosen this year is Knives Out which looks like lots of fun!

I loved The Witch and while The Lighthouse was a gorgeous looking move and had two very good performances, oof was it boring. I thought it would have made a solid short film.

It seems like I am the only person who didn't like "The Witch." I found it boring and the ending was so abrupt. A part of me wants to watch "The Lighthouse" just to say I did it but with people saying they liked "The Witch" and was bored by "The Lighthouse"..............it makes me second guess that.

Parasite is a wonderful film that you shouldn't know much about before you see it. I read as much beforehand so avoided reviews and was better off for it. Song Kang-ho, who plays the main family's father, is especially good.

The delight of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the realization that what sounded like a really bad idea when I heard about it actually works very well. It's not a perfect film, but it's the best Quentin Tarantino movie I've seen in forever and feels like the one he should have gone out with if he's really serious about giving up filmmaking. 

Waiting to see The Irishman and Marriage Story.

Knives Out : enjoyed it a lot , could it have been tighter and a little more fun, of course. It could have lost a good 15 minutes and been an excellent film.

I almost exclusively watch movies these days for free on my Delta flights. (Certainly not the ideal way to watch movies although there is something to be said for watching sometimes-slightly-edited movies soaring above the earth with a glass of wine or a cocktail in your hand) I actually haven’t been in a movie theatre since I caught up on some of the movies Oscar nominated for motion picture this year. I had plans to see a few 2019 movies at the cineplex, but just didn’t have the energy to go. I’m usually trying to catch up with my DVR or Netflix when I’m home.

Of the 2019 movies I’ve watched on planes, most varied between disappointing to just okay. The exceptions have been:

Top 4
Toy Story 4
Booksmart
Rocketman
Us


Honorable Mentions
Aladdin (not a necessary remake and I’m no fan of Guy Ritchie, but it just barely exceeded my limited expectations and thought it was better than the The Lion King remake; still glad I didn’t pay to see it)
Late Night (once you get past the flimsy premise, this is great fun)
Yesterday (the premise falls apart if you think about it and the ending is weak, but it at least has some originality to it)
Dumbo (another unnecessary remake, but it was enjoyable and better than I expected)
The LEGO Movie Pt. 2

Delta is pretty good about adding movies once they’re nominated by Oscars for best picture so hoping to see some worthier films soon. I still want to see Judy and Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood and looking forward to catching The Irishman on Netflix.

 

Update: after reviewing this thread I remembered I that I also want to see Joker, Jo Jo Rabbit, Parasite and maybe Marriage Story.

Frozen 2 wasn't for me. The sloppy writing muddles a simple story. It feels very video game-y. I like the song "Into the Unknown" but will forget the rest of as quickly as I forgot Tangled's.
