I don’t think anyone is surprised by this news - Dianond’s old arch-enemy Barry Manilow had a jukebox musical of his own before the sub genre was run into the ground. But bio-musicals like this feel very conventional, and I personally tend to gravitate towards more modern music...

Manilow was Diamond’s arch enemy? Manilow had a jukebox musical? (I wouldn’t put Copacabana or Harmony under that genre). Does anyone know if this is correct?

I was counting Copacabana as a Jukebox musical - but we had a very different understanding of the genre in 1994, and that wasn’t a bio-musical in the way this one is.

My claim that Barry Manilow is Neil Diamond’s archenemy is based on that infamous anecdote from the making of Diamond’s ill-fated remake of The Jazz Singer - it was claimed that he asked the orchestra to play Barry Manilow songs in order to make him angry enough to do key argument scenes...

Not anytime soon, I’m afraid. I decree henceforth that all announcements of jukebox shows now begin with “Not Another One! _____ Musical to Hit Broadway In ______” Sick and tired of these.

I still have not seen a jukebox musical I've fallen in love with, nor seen a bio-jukebox musical that I've even liked. Maybe that would change if I were passionate about the artist instead of just "liking" them, but thats the only way youll get me in a seat for another one.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The only really good Jukebox musical in the last 5 years was Lazarus (the David Bowie one) and the fact that didnt make it to Broadway is absurd.

Here’s hoping they include the Barbra Streisand character as they both were classmates at Erasmus High School in Brooklyn and later recorded their famous duet “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” 2 decades later.

Wasn’t it slaughtered by the critics , I know the Australian ones hated it. Back on topic Diamonds music is quiet wonderful IMO 

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I feel awful I missed this off-B'way, I heard they recorded the London version so hope that comes out soon

I NEED THEM TO STOP!!!!!!! Have never liked a jukebox musical. I doubt Neil Simon will be the one to change that.

I don't necessarily mind bio-musicals if they're entertaining but I have zero interest in a Neil Diamond show. Actually zero. That's rare. What demo are they targeting with this? Even though there's always a certain age group that remembers an artist's music most fondly, I can see how Jersey Boys, Ain't Too Proud, The Cher Show, etc. can sell to different demographics. Not this one.

If they're going to make bio-musicals, can't it be about people with interesting lives? What about Lena Horne or Nat King Cole or Nina Simone?

Some part of me feels like I have already had my Neil Diamond musical, in the form of The Other Josh Cohen ("Neil Life is Better Than Real Life", etc.).   I know that it was not his music in that show, but i loved the show so much that I don't feel like I need to see another musical featuring Neil Diamond in some way, as it might not live up to the happy memories from Josh Cohen.

Now if they were to posthumously get permission from Neil Simon's estate to use one of his plays as the book, and then drop in the ND songs and make them fit the story, that might make me curious enough to go check it out.   :)
