COMPANY negotiating a spring 2020 transfer at a Shubert theater |
Wow, you must only be familiar with really bad productions because that's not true at all. Especially this particular London revival. Patti was excellent, but she did not walk away with the show or overshadow anyone. Is one of the reasons I loved it so much. I mean, even the woman who performed the church singing in Not Getting Married made a permanent impression. And as long as I live I'll never forget the manic brilliance of Jonathan Bailey. And his legs in those pants. *sigh*
No one has ever made a name for themselves playing any other role than Joanne. Even Bobby's are known before they appear in the shown or never known at all. Anthony Perkins has commented on how really glad he is he didn't take the part (it was offered to him) when he finally saw it. And Jones' first statement to him was a frustrated "I tried, man. I really tried."
The show is the star of that show.
By most reports, the character is far more interesting and the stakes are higher when played by a woman.

Stephanie J Block received an offer early July for Bobbie. Don't know the status now. Avail/interest has been checked for a select group of Broadway leading ladies as well, including Kate Baldwin.
Patti Lupone is confirmed. Rehearsals will begin January.

I would be THRILLED with Stephanie or Kate!

IF Block did this, and IF she got great acclaim, and IF she won a Tony for the role... she would be the first person since Gwen Verdon to win Best Actress in a Musical 2 years in a row. And one of Gwen's was a tie.
IMHO, I think SJB is a little long in the tooth for the role, though I suppose it raises the stakes if Bobbie is 5-10 years from menopause. She'd sing it thrillingly.

I’m sorry maybe I’m missing something but how do we know they’re closing up in October? I know they’re grosses aren’t great but

Bobbi in this production is a rubbish part. It won’t be winning anyone a Tony award. Unless it’s played by someone famous and then they’ll just want to give it to them because of that.
If Johnny Bailey comes with the show, he WILL win the Tony.

It’s Bobbie.
SJB is technically too old, but I’m slowly warming to the idea.
Block will be 47 in September

The entire “plot” revolves around the character’s 35th birthday.
She does look quite good for 47 though.

To answer some questions - Beautiful will indeed be shutting down in the Fall. And NO ONE from the London production, including Jonathan Bailey, will be coming here, except for Patti Lupone.
With all the talk of movie stars, I must say the mention of SJB getting an offer is a bit of a shock. (Yes, she's a bit too old, but she's wonderful.) You would think if they were going to not hire a movie star, then they would've brought over Rosalie. Interesting.
It's a shame Sutton is busy.
