Jeremy Jordan to star as record exec Neil Bogart in the movie 'Spinning Gold'

After a few years of starts and stops, it looks like musical biopic of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart called "Spinning Gold" will start filming in a few weeks. The big news is that Tony-nominated Broadway actor Jeremy Jordan has signed on to play Bogart, who died in 1982 at the age of 39 from cancer.

Jordan replaces Justin Timberlake, who was previously announced as the actor who plays Bogart when the porject was first announced quite a few years ago. Laurence Mark ('Dreamgirls', 'The Greatest Showman'  )  has been signed on as producer, while the film will be written and to be directed by Timothy Scott Bogart - son of the late Neil Bogart.

Wow. I heard Jeremy had been cast but had no idea it was originally announced that Justin Timberlake would be playing the part. While I know Justin Timberlake was announced years ago, and I am not surprised the casting changed, I AM surprised they didn't go with someone bigger for Bogart. Especially given who else has been announced. 

Go Jeremy! Happy he got it. Big fan of what he's done in his career so far and happy to see him step into something bigger.

Samuel L. Jacksom will be playing George Clinton.

Wonder why the son dropped Spike Lee from the project?

This is the first project Timothy Scott Bogart has ever directed, so this looks a tad iffy. He’s a successful producer and screenwriter but he’s never directed anything prior. Its quite obvious he will have someone shadowing him as the technical aspects of directing for film is quite difficult. Even for someone who has been on set. Actors with extensive acting credits who are starting to direct have had to shadow directors on a few projects just to understand the tech aspects. There’s so much more than telling actors what to do.

I'm wondering if there has been cast changes (Lee, Timberlake) because so much time has lapsed ? It's been on again / off again for quite some time. I think the last we heard about it was when "Summer" was still in it's workshop phase - and that was three years ago, I believe (if not longer).

My first thought was vanity. When you have no directing experience and you drop Spike Lee from a project?  JMO

May I ask, is Neil Bogart's story all that fascinating?   I am not an officianado in the music world in the slightest - but is this something the average public will even be interested in?
