Was wondering who was at the show tonight, since I heard the applause when she entered. Interesting...

Yes... she looked like she was enjoying the play but then every 5-10 minutes, out her cellphone would come and she was messaging. A shame a fellow performer wouldn’t have a bit more respect for those on stage and her friend the playwright.

That had to be annoying. Even for the patrons upstairs.

O’Harris’ tweet is appalling, IMO. Celebrating her behavior is an insult to all of his colleagues and every other paying member of his audience, not just at that performance but EVERY performance.

She was close enough to the stage to be lit from the stage (with the mirrors and all), so we couldn't see any of that, probably only something people behind her could see...

Well he clearly has a different opinion as expressed in the thread:

"I respect Lin’s position, I just don’t share it.

I’m not interested in policing anyone’s relationship to watching a play ESPECIALLY someone who isn’t a part of the regular theatregoing crowd.

Moreover, as ppl on this site know I’m famously ambivalent abt phone use in theatre."

So, he doesn't care if people use their phone at his play.

Well, this is just going to encourage others to have their phones out during the performance.  Dopes will think they are doing him a favor texting on their phones.  I'm seeing it next Monday.  If my experience is ruined by phones,  I'll be asking for a refund.  BTW, since there is nudity in the play, I would think the production would take a more serious stance against phones out.

I mean... I kind of agree with him. Out of everything to make a fuss over, someone being on their phone should be the least of theatre artists concern.

It would be one thing if he let it slide and kept his mouth shut. If he doesn't have a problem with her doing that, then just keep quiet. That would be one thing. It's another to celebrate it all because he wants his celebrity crush to like him. Now he just represents the Kardashian era of bulls@#t branding and nonsense. He can talk all he wants about his knowledge of theatre and plays but if your foundation isn't that theatre is sacred and shouldn't be ruined by lit up phones, then I've lost respect. If this is "young Broadway" he can keep it. Holding a curtain for a late celeb who texts during the show. Trashy.

This will make it harder for house staff as well. <<edited by BWW staff>>

I'm not sure that not really giving af is the same as celebrating it. Sounds like he is ambivalent or indifferent.

It's sad that he let someone he knows have special privileges and held the curtain for that person who was running late.  If a show has "no late seating", those people will not be allowed entry and will need to post-date their ticket.  If a show does have late seating, those people will miss part of the show.  I feel bad for anyone who missed their hourly train because of the late start, or who had to pay their babysitter overtime, etc.

Someone educate me.  What are the many more disrespectable things he has to endure in a theater, than a light from the phone? I mean for me, it's people talking, eating, arriving late, as well as texting and making/receiving phone calls during a show. I really don't know him or his work, but he doesn't seem to thrilled that his production will be opening on Broadway.

What is indifferent about telling people you are texting with someone during your show? Isn't he offended that she's not even watching his work? Clearly not because he's more concerned she remain his friend and take pictures backstage with him. Celebrity of today is really off putting to me. Clearly I'm a relic, but this is really egregious to someone like myself who loves theatre. If I had to sit next to her I'd be livid.

The NERVE of that woman!  Who does she think she is?  She shouldn't get a "pass" just because the night before she was hosting an event to raise money for her charitable foundation (you know, the one with global initiatives?).  What right did she have to arrive minutes late for her friend's show?  Or to text.  TEXT !   I bet those involved with this production were FURIOUS that a super-star was in the audience.  And I just KNOW that when she munched on her little candies, the papers make that awful crinkling sound.  Grrrrrr.

And one more thing.  She better  STAY  OFF  MY  LAWN  !!

Ok.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Being a 'relic' has nothing to do with it. Manners and respect should span all ages. They have sadly gone out the door with most of this generation and they find any way to justify it. And rules mean nothing to them.

Harris is constantly quoted as saying that theatre is dying and it needs to change. He also just posted that he went to a play this weekend and texted during it because HE WAS LIVING and needed to express himself. Ok.

It also irks that he seems to think that he is somehow addressing the fact that people can't afford theatre by making the last rows in the house $40. He keeps going on and on about how theatre has been commercialized and he wants young people and people from lower SES attending. He said that usually only "people in the know" are invited to first dress and he was changing that by inviting students and people from the internet. Many shows do that. Also it is why lottery, SRO and rush were invented. Those weren't always around. <<edited by BWW staff>>

For the record most people can't afford $40 for a ticket either, so its really not changing the audience if that is what he thinks is happening.

I’m “some queen” who was “on it”. His use of the hashtag #theatrenerd was a dig directed at me because I’d used it in an earlier tweet that weekend when I saw - and greatly enjoyed - Slave Play. I’m not quite sure where he gets the idea that audible reaction to a show is the same as texting through it. The staff repeatedly told us to put our phones away our of respect for the graphic nude scenes. Does he believe we should ignore them and photograph the cast because it’s how we feel like responding when we are LIVING for Paul Nolan’s body? And now the racial implications are being brought into it, as if those of us who are speaking out are white elitists. He lost a fan today, sadly. I would never spend my money seeing one of his shows again because I’d fear I wasn’t welcome, and that the audience would be too disrespectful for me to enjoy the experience.

Because of him, it is only a matter of time before people start taking photos during the nude and sex scenes. And we’ll see the same rightful outrage we saw when it happened during Frankie and Johnny.

i cant believe (a) he is so obtuse he would feel comfortable sharing these sentiments publicly so that people *paying money to see his show* can read how utterly contemptuous he is of them and the actors on stage and (b) that there is even a debate here about how utterly wrong and obnoxious both notions are.

1. texting during the show is not a form of quiet self expression because we can ALL see your phone's light. so even if i buy that someone is so moved that they have to express themselves right then and there via text message, doing so is the epitome of rude. rude, again, to the people paying to see your show.

but 2. bother me even more. THEY HELD THE CURTAIN BECAUSE RIHANNA WAS RUNNING LATE? HE HAD THEM HOLD THE CURTAIN FOR HIS FRIEND WHO WAS LATE? maybe that means 2-3 minutes, in which case my rage is overboard. but the idea that the paying audience sits and waits because a celebrity (with all the time and money in the world to get there on time) is late really is beyond the pale. why should the producers allow that?

this is particularly egregious because its rihanna: i actually saw her live a few years back in tel aviv. everyone expected her not go on "on time" because an 8pm concert doesnt usually start until much later. but she was posting pictures of herself catching sunset near the dead sea at that moment. meaning 30,000 people could all see that she was lazing around while they stood and waited. (she then put on a horribly lazy show, but thats beside the point).

ugh.
