Moving to New York

I am moving to New York at the beginning of July. I will be working downtown in the financial district. I enjoy the theater and expect to take in a couple shows a week, so my preference is to live in Manhattan to be close to both work and the theater district. I've visited the city before but never lived there. If anyone has any suggestions of where to live - or where not to - I would appreciate any recommendations. I am most interested in a studio apartment for rent.

Ill give an actual answer since most posters on here are incapable of doing that. 

 

Since you're so close, you're going to need to sublet for a month or two. NYC renting process is ridiculously competitive and you sorta need to take the time to prepare and actually act on it. Sometimes apartments might be listed as soon as today and be gone as soon as today. So for now, id focus on subletting for a month at a time and see where that gets you. Hell's Kitchen is likely the best neighborhood for you, but I'm not an expert on Manhattan neighborhoods. This close though, Id really focus on subletting to start your search so you don't get stuck in a place for a year that you do not want. Best of luck OP!!!!

I lived in the Financial District when I first moved here a few years ago. It's a great area, though heavily touristed on weekends, and many things close early-ish during the week because it's such a business area. But where I lived, I had the 1, R, W, 4, and 5 trains within 3 short blocks. It was amazing. If you're working down there, and you can afford it, go for it. It's 15 minutes to Times Square, and you only have the tourists on the weekends rather than 24/7 like Midtown.

I hope you didn't take the EA job in Rudin's office. You won't survive working 14 hour days on less than $18 hr.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm staying in a hotel for the first two weeks with the option to extend longer. I'm also working with a broker. I will look at Hell's Kitchen.

I lived in the financial district near the seaport for a couple years and loved it. I’ve lived in Hell’s Kitchen now for over a decade and can’t ever see leaving this neighborhood but man, I loved it down there.

Both areas sound like great places to look. Do you have any specific buildings you would recommend?
