just saw the show last week
and sad to hear its closing

great book with some nice satire on bway and a lot of delightful
fun score with several gems
wonderful and very lovable cast
all that said its a good and probably not great show with a story line thats not as likely to register mass appeal.

the bands visit won 10 tonys and closed after 18 because there is not sustained mass appeal for beautiful niche productions(although i read it did recoup)

i think a lot of people give more credit to tonys driving demand for seats than they deserve.

grateful to see it looking forward to its extended life on netflix and hope it tours (at least on the coasts)

congrats to all the team for a fine and fun production

One casting note: Michael Potts is leaving Friday to film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom for Netflix. Michael Genet (most recently Chuck Cooper's understudy in Choir Boy) will play Mr. Hawkins for the remainder of the run.
"

Wow. I'm so glad I went back to see the show before Michael left. He was wonderful. Actually, I think the whole cast is wonderful but I especially love the chemistry between Michael Potts and Beth Leavel. I would be interested to see Michael Genet as Tom Hawkins.

I am truly heartbroken about this announcement. The Prom is hilarious and heartfelt. I left the theater feeling so much joy.

Very sad news. But wow, what a legacy this show leaves behind...

For me personally - it was really great to re-connect with some Broadway favorites in Angie and Michael. That’s part of the “good stuff” in Broadway that is always enjoyable for a fan.

The cast was awesome top to bottom. Unfortunate it didn’t fair better at the Tony’s. I guess that was it’s undoing despite its popularity among the fans. With the inevitable popularity of the upcoming Netflix special, I wouldn’t rule out a revival one day. We can certainly hope anyway :)

Do you mean, you haven't seen it yet, or you are surprised by the closing notice?

I doubt it will stay open till August 11, as it is still losing dough each week. Priority loans kept it open for as long as it has been, and is a TOTAL LOSS. That means it loses the $13 million clams investors made to open it and the several million in loans given to keep it alive. It was cheap looking, and didn't do it for me.  I will never understand why it was kept alive, for so darn long.

What a fun show with so much heart! Beth deserved that TONY IMHO.   Thanks for the many laughs and many tears.

Damned shame.  It just didn't find an audience.

I'm not shocked based on what I regularly see packed into today's Broadway musical.

No surprise, but I think it'll do well regionally and on tour.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Is there a chance it would close before the 11th? I know that the show ticket would be refunded if it did, but plane tickets aren't changeable.

But  King Kong lives on because people want to see a puppet.. ..the worst show I ever saw (and I saw the News and Raggety Ann but I walked out on Kong...the first time ever  )     ,....this is sad news for a very good show with I believe a great score....

Firstly and lastly:

310 performances is hardly a short run. Quite respectable, IMHO.

Folks, lets not throw stones in glass houses while blaming other musicals for the downfall of The Prom. While also deeply personal, art is also subjective.

Not that it really matters but anything less than a year is a short run to me.

"But  King Kong lives on because people want to see a puppet.."

I have given up trying to figure out why some shows run as long as they do, this one is the most amazing one to me.

No, King Kong lives on because the producers have very deep pockets and want to build a brand.  More importantly, it lives on because there is no other show ready to move in to the Broadway Theatre at this moment.  If there were a show that was ready, KK would be out next week.

I agree with your first half, but isn't it still common for shows to closes before another show could take that theater, leaving it barren for a bit? Like the Barrymore for example had no shows for months after TBV until the recent The Inheritance announcement. Maybe that is fairly uncommon, but is that really out of the question either?

But there is a good chance the Barrymore knew about The Inheritance long before the announcement, so nothing else could have jumped in there.

Does anyone know if there are any scheduled vacations among the cast?

This is honestly such a vast bummer. I haven't loved a musical this much in years - it'll be wonderful for schools and community theatres, but I'm still saddened.

Finally saw this last week; wow, I disliked it so much! Chad Beguelin’s lyrics and the book were so unfunny to me. The songs mostly seemed like less exciting knock offs of other songs. Characters just say zany things in order to be surprising. Motivations are very questionable. Emma doesn’t believe Alyssa that she didn’t know, even after dating for a year and a half? Seems like that is only to keep the plot going into act two. I liked all of the actors playing the “Broadway actors” but the roles were SO one-note. They each have one joke or trait that they lean on for the entire show. Like they have Beth Leavel, who is amazing, and all she gets to do the entire time is repeat the same jokes about being a narcissist. I thought this show was just so low quality, I can’t believe the way people talk about it so glowingly. Very bad writing.

THIS will do great regionally and at colleges and some high schools.

Couldn’t agree more. Sad for everyone out of work, but this show was such a chore to sit through.

I think it depends which region. I don't see this being popular in certain areas of the US.
