Google “is Nicholas Sparks anti-gay?” and an article from the Daily Beast pops up. I read it, and although Sparks seems to issue an apology via Twitter, I’m not sure I buy it. Just in case, I think I would pass on involving myself with anything Nicholas Sparks. I saw The Notebook movie and liked it. But In the author’s heart, if he’s anti-gay and racist, well, I’ll pass on supporting his shows. Just like the MJ Show seems doomed (for good reasons, I believe) I think this one will be going down as well. We’ll see.

While I have heard about that, I was asking a simple question about tickets. If you’d like, you can start your own thread regarding that. Thank you.

He's clearly anti-LGTBQIA.  Why support him?

If you would like to talk about that, by all means start a different thread. As evidenced by how quickly the reading sold out, there are people who support the reading and the potential of the show. This does not mean these people are anti-LGBTQIA as well. It doesn't. Please bring that conversation somewhere else.

It is a site for discussion. You don't always get to determine how that discussion unfolds...

Just started a thread about the ethics of the show.  If you want to talk about that, that's where you can go.

There already was a thread where it was being discussed:

https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.php?thread=1114091#5114694

People decided to discuss it here too, as you can likely expect to happen in any thread discussing this show. You're not going to be able to segregate the opinions when any support of this show will likely involve lining the pockets of a homophobic zealot. Given the close connections between the LGBT and Broadway communities, people are going to call that out. How trying that fans of a terrible book by a terrible writer will be ever so inconvenienced by people calling out homophobia.

No, I think it needs to be discussed here as well. On as many pages that Broadwayworld.com allows until it is picked up by the New York Times and the producers are shamed into disbanding.

Especially since they just got together and sent out this response:

" We are encouraged that Mr. Sparks has made a strong statement of support of the LGBTQ+ community today. The Notebook musical team has been given complete freedom to create a very new piece of art from the source material of the book and our mission for the past 3 years has been and continues to be to create a story of love and humanity that reflects our core values of diversity and inclusion."

This was posted by: Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch, composer Ingrid Michaelson, book writer Bekah Brunstetter, and director Michael Grief.  Some who are gay, some who are strong gay allies!!

Aren't we all so woke until it gets in the way of us making money, uh, excuse me "art".  Disgusting.

After Lynn Nottage and Christopher Wheeldon were dispatched to the NYTimes in the wake of Finding Neverland to have a  cringeworthy interview about how they can't judge Michael Jackson, can anyone be surprised about this?

You don't get to decide what we discuss on a thread, especially when it directly involves the show that you are referring to.  Sorry OP!

I understand what all of you are saying. I do. But I just asked a simple question. If you have more to say, maybe think about the right place to say it. Maybe comment on a general thread about the show in question rather than one post that could have been simply answered. Think, people. Yes, freedom of speech and all, you can't control it and all, except you can think before you post. This doesn't just apply to me. Two way street folks. There's more than one Notebook post. Go forth and look for those. Thank you to the person who made a separate thread. Go to that. You wouldn't comment on someones post saying they had a ticket for sale with all the bad things about that show, would you? Because I've seen a bunch of "x ticket for sale" posts and no one has done that. Just saying. K I'm done.

Err, people often tell them they are overcharging, that they overpaid... and people who share their upcoming travel plans are often told they could fit better shows in if they got rid of X or YYY. So, it sort of happens a lot.

If anything, people should be telling all the X ticket for sale people that there is now a buy/sell thread for that. The Notebook Reading Tickets...

You do release you don't get to pick and choose who can leave a comment on a thread you started?

I like some others on here will in no way support this man or the production.

To the OP, why does it bother you so much that the conversation has evolved? Between asking for the mods to close it, and now marking it for erasure its truly curious.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

*sigh*. Honestly, dramamama? I guess I’m thankful people are making me aware of Sparks and how he feels. But I’m so sick of feeling guilty for each show I show interest in. Just because I see tootsie, for example, doesn’t mean I’m transphobic. If I had gotten a ticket to the reading, would that make me against the LGBTQIA+ community? NO. I guess that’s why I was so sensitive and I’m very sorry for overreacting!

I dont think its about making you feel bad, I think its about making you (or whomever) aware.

Many of us are pretty blunt about our messages, which can often seem like criticism or that we're attacking/being harsh. Its usally only meant to be direct.

I understand, but at the same time, you shouldn't assume people are oblivious to what is happening. If I asked about tickets, don't you think I would've seen previous comments about the problems people have with Sparks? People should never assume that. Just...think about it. That's all.
