i also wonder whether this play would have fared better if it had an out-of-town regional tryout or off-bway tryout first rather than having a world premiere performance on broadway.

I'm curious if they did have that in mind, would it even move to Broadway? Even in an a theater as small as the Booth, I wouldn't say it's out of place, but it might have gotten a better response in an even smaller theater

It got a Critics Pick from the NYTimes, which is about as good a response as a show could hope for. It also had 45 previews to work out the problems, which is a huge luxury. This is an esoteric play that would have needed Melissa McCarthy or Tina Fey starring alongside Lane to really sell tickets. It also had a terrific ad campaign.

It could have tried out somewhere like the Public, but then people (like me) might have said "nah, I don't need to see it again when it moves." NYT says the Broadway production cost nearly $5million, which is eye-wateringly high for a play; an enhanced Off-B run would have added another half mil+ to those losses.

It's great that it made it to Broadway, and I'll be interested to see what type of actors play the roles regionally. A woman or nonbinary person could absolutely play Gary.

An enby actor would be fantastic in this (and considering Mac, judy probably had that in mind before Lane got attached), or an all women cast

And by that I mean the surprise actors too

would be a must watch.

Now I have a ticket for a show I’ve never seen and a window card to match. LOL. Called Telecharge to make sure my ticket was canceled, I’m guessing they really haven’t had time yet, so I went ahead and told them to cancel. Looking forward to finding a replacement show for my birthday! This is going to be fun!!!

Here's a question for someone who knows more about the business end of things. I assume that the advance sales are held in some sort of interest bearing account. If so, how does the accrued interest play into the gross/recoupment schedule? Not that it would have been very high for a show like this, but I would imagine that the hits could see a tidy sum just off of that interest alone.

The show doesn't get any of the interest.  The theatre owner (Shuberts, Nederlanders or Jujamcyn) holds the advance in their accounts and pays the show its share (minus rent, operating costs, house crew, etc.) at the end of each week in the settlement. Any interest accrued during the run belongs to the theatre owner.

Thanks for the answer, JSquared.

What's sad about it? It strikes me as entirely reasonable that someone who hated the show would hope not to see anything like it again, and would indeed consider not seeing any more offerings like it again a plus.

Well it's just that we usually don't get something this strange on Broadway and I wish that was supported more. I do admit 'sad' might have not been the best word, as hey again people are totally fine with not liking what they don't like.

Someone authoritatively said it was closing on the 23rd in some thread.

I did enjoy this show but got a free ticket through Audience Rewards. When I see a play I always envision what it would be like without its set. I once took a playwriting course and the instructor said that a solid play should be anchored by its dialogue-if you have to rely on staging then you might want to work on it more. A good play should deliver in a bare black box or a Broadway production with a large budget.

I don't see this play doing well without all the bells and whistles. That being said, I had fun even if I didn't really get it.

Hey, everyone. Someone mentioned that cheap seats are available on discount sites. How would I go about that? I'd like to see Gary again.

Well, as a “first” for me, I now have a Playbill to accompany the window card and ticket for a show I’ve never seen. Still sad that I didn’t get to see this before it closed.

Tomorrow is the final show. Anyone going? Gary closing this Sunday

HelloDolly5, I actually wanted to go to the closing show since my work schedule changed for the past few weeks and had the day off. Opted to get things done that I haven't been able to for the past two weeks. I went at the beginning of previews and really wanted to see it again after it opened.
