Ain't Too Proud is a great musical with a great book and its a shame it only won for choreography (Although Highly deserved). Derrick Baskin and Ephraim Sykes were horribly snubbed at this years Boring Tony Awards.   Musicals with a mostly all black cast almost always get a sh@&t load of nominations and go home with one or two or none.   Jellys Last Jam  1992 …  The Color Purple (OBC 2005) … Motown 2013.

Hadestown sucked in my opinion! I thought the show dragged on and confused me.   Hopefully The Tina Turner Musical will bring about a change in 2020.

Ain't too Proud did fine. It got nominated over the Cher Show-- another Juke Box Musical which was better.

Ain't Too Proud won Best Choreography.

Hadestown is a better more original show. Get over it.

Ain't to Proud is just like all the other Juke Box musicals. Broadway is becoming  another and another Des McNuff Juke Box Musical. The music is great but the formula is getting old.  Jersey Boys, Beautiful, Cher, Tina Turner, Donna Summer, Ain't too Proud..ad nauseam.

And the Tony's award many wonderful African American Artists. Andre De Shields this year alone! Billy Porter. Nell Carter, Cynthia Erivo, Debbie Alan.... So please don't play that card. It's getting old.

And this year we had a person in a wheel char win  Ally Stoker and she deserved to win!!!!

I am sorry your favorites did not win. It happens a lot.

Is Hadestown not a mostly non white cast? Patrick, Reeve, and two workers, I believe?

There’s just something that’s uncomplicated and boring about a juke box musical that has some history and choreography thrown in for good measure. I couldn’t be dragged to one when there are soooo many other, better, more inspired options on Broadway that took real skill and imagination to develop.

Don't tell me to get over it!  If you read my post and paid attention, then you would see that I wrote" in my opinion"  and in my opinion I stand by what I said with no apologies.  Just because you can name a few black actors who won Tony's over the years … Good For You.   I said mostly all black Casts.  Again, Hades town Sucked in my opinion. I did not like it.  I thought it was boring and confusing with forgettable songs.   Aint Too Proud in my opinon was better ...   jukebox or not … You get over it

This is hardly a snub - for all the reasons mentioned above. PLUS, and this probably a lot more to do with it losing - this is Jersey Boys with blue jackets and a 5th singer. More of the same from the same director and same choreographer. That it was nominated at all is the prize here. Super slick didn't cut it this year. I, for one, and relieved.

And so what? It is selling like hotcakes and audiences seem to enjoy it. Awards aren't all that makes a show or its performers successful.

I totally agree. In my opinion Ain’t Too Proud is the worst musical next to Be More Chill this past season and I saw all of them. Some several times.  It’s like reading a Wikipedia entry with tired top 40 music thrown in. I hate jukebox musicals.

It had a "great book"?  What book?  It didn't even deserve Best Choreography over Kiss Me, Kate!

Get over it, Malinda.

I am black, I saw everything on Broadway this season, and I loved Ain’t Too Proud. All those noms were well-deserved.

BUT I don’t think they got snubbed with any of the losses, especially in categories like, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, where Jeremy and Eph didn’t stand a chance against André De Shields, another person of color who won — deservingly so! The right folks earned their Tonys imho. I can’t play the race card this year.

HOWEVER, y’all’s replies to the OP are rude AF, and I suspect are coming from white people who have always had the privilege of having seen your stories and people that look like you on a Broadway stage, forever.

The way y’all responded to the OP was nasty, snarky, unnecessary, and a revealing part of the problem of why diversity on Broadway is difficult.

Check your privilege, and be more kind and understanding.

I would disagree with this. The book was the most important part, being all the songs were from the Temptations/Motown catalog. The book writer had to figure out how to string all those songs together. The book was def great. Dominique Morisseau did a brilliant job.

But, Robert Horn's book for 'Tootsie' was more clever and deserving imo. Happy he won.

Oh God, TINA is gonna piss off a LOT of people here it’s a great performance in a truly mediocre, often not very good at all, musical.

Get ready.

I'm with ya, Matilda. I felt the same way about Gettin' the Band Back Together and it didn't even get a nom for anything, not even Best Vanity Project. So snubbed. Ain't Too Proud was so good and the book is great, so incredibly realistic, it almost had me believing it was about real life people. Let all the snobs rave about Hadestown. I mean it's not even a real town. Show me where it is on a map. You can't! They totally made it up. You and I know the truth. Ain't Too Proud is the best.

Pinning your hopes on the next jukebox musical may be a losing strategy, since they do tend to be overlooked more often than not...

I am black.

And yes, for years I would love to have seen more shows with black casts. The ones we have had have been mostly good. But i would also venture to say that there are more black Tony winners than Oscar winners. And what black film star has six Oscars?

The comments here are not about race. They are about the quality of a show. ATP was fine, but coming from a person who grew up in that era, it missed the mark. The temps had tighter moves and did not use all of the vocal flourishes they did in this show. The tweaking of these two things, for me, would have made this a much better show. JMO

I hate the use of the word "snubbed" in this context. To "snub" would mean that there was a conscious and concerted effort to not allow a show to receive any Tony awards. That's just crazy conspiracy thinking.
