Cher show at the tonys performance |
It looked like a big budget drag contest. But that's the thing with The Cher Show - it has some substance, but it's all in the book, not in the numbers. I would actually avoid the show after seeing that performance. But I would be wrong. As an attempt to sell the show to audiences, I would say it was a fail. As an attempt to explain why Stephanie J. Block won the Tony, it was also a fail. To see the magic of TCS you have to let people see the Follies-like interaction between Cher and her younger selves.
The finale, even an abridged version, would have been a much better choice. Higher energy, showcasing Star, Lady, and Babe, and a good mashup of Cher’s catalog.

Um, BELIEVE , is the finale. They should have done the fashion show number. Better energy and better costumes.
Believe is part of the finale, yes, but the the three actresses sing bits of other songs, and the female ensemble is in matching costumes, not the fashion show costumes. I guess what I meant was the finale as it is staged in the show. In the theater it electrified me. Tonight this mash up staging fizzled.

Yupppp. The turn back time catsuit would have been a way better choice

That performance! Did the real Cher cancel at some point? To me this exemplified what frustrated me about this show. I was OBSESSED with it in Chicago (saw it 6x) and at some point during the Broadway transfer the powers that be clearly thought to themselves "we are overthinking this - the people just want an amusement park ride" and that is what I saw on Broadway. In advance of this awards show, I am sure they knew they had Best Actress in the bag and they didn't want to overthink it. I cannot see this show surviving with SJB.

That’s what I was thinking while watching it. No energy from the leads or ensemble, and SJB was phoning it in. Heck, she had even picked up the phone. I love this show, I had the best time. But tonight left me bummed.

THIS 100% . They tried to combine the finale with the fashion show and it failed miserably ... although, the night I saw the show on Broadway, the finale felt phoned in with little energy.
It was awful. What a mess! The show belongs in Vegas or on a cruise ship. As for the costumes, the less said, the better.
I will take the word of people who've seen the show that Stephanie J. Block turned in a terrific performance in a musical that isn't as bad as it looked. She did sound like Cher, I'll give her that.
Tony performances are weird. They can go horribly wrong. This one did. It reinforced every doubt I ever had about even considering this show on my recent trip.
I never really understood the logic that Block deserved a Tony for this performance in a show considered so weak that it wasn't nominated for Best Musical in a year with five nominees. She's 46, just got nominated for a Tony two years ago. Is she really at the stage of her career that people think this is her last shot?
For me it was underwhelming (and I'm a Cher fan!) I'll admit I was hoping to see the real CHER perform at some point of the CHER SHOW performance. There was a point during their performance where I thought the real Cher was going to be revealed but realized it was Dee Roscioli (Star standby) dressed up in her Cher costume.
I felt the performance was aimed at middle America who grew up on the Sonny and Cher show. They probably saw that and fell out of their chair. I've seen TCS twice and enjoyed it for what it was (we won the lottery the second time) I think it will tour well.
The Cher Show is the most fun one can have on Broadway right now.
It is not Hadestown or The Bands Visit. It is pure unadulterated fun. Tootsie is a better show with okay music. While I was rooting for Hadestown to win the Tony, I must admit I had more fun at the Cher Show.
The Cher Show was eons better than Beetlejuice in my humble opinion and can't believe Beetlejuice was nominated.
Stefanie Block gives a STAR performance in that show. It is breathtaking what she does in that show. This was not a consolation prize. It was a STAR performance. Like Streisand in Funny Girl. Like Lansbury in Name. Like Verdon in Charity. She will take your breath away.
I have sent people to see the Cher Show and I alway say make sure Stephanie Block is in it. She is the real reason to see it followed by the fun numbers and the story. And everyone I have sent to the Cher Show has thanked me. So stop being so "snobby" about the Cher Show and the amazing Stefanie Block.
Stefanie Block is a force to be reckoned with. If you haven't seen her in the Cher show-- do so. Then you can say what you want.
I've always respected Stefanie's Block's work, But Stefanie as Cher blew me away.
And I didn't think the Tony number was bad at all.
